Here’s a fun fact for you: the UFC offered 20,000 bucks to every fighter that ‘cleanly finished his opponent’ at UFC 94. You know the results: everyone except Lyoto Machida and Georges St Pierre choked, resulting in 8 fights out of 10 going to decision.
It will be interesting to see if the UFC keeps the 20k incentive on the table after it flopped so badly. And who knows, maybe it was just a one time thing? Personally, I’m hoping they keep it around because it’s a serious help to those stuck on the prelim card or TUF contracts. I’m not a huge fan of fighters having shitty base pay and needing to rely on fluctuating bonus money from moody upper management. But a 20k bonus for finishing a fight is a nice step in the right direction for those of us who bitch about how badly people get paid coming into the UFC.
There’s still the issue of losing fighters getting so little that they’re liable to OWE money after a failed UFC run. But we’ll take what we get for now and keep pushing for the UFC to move base pay per fight up from 3k/3k to something less ass-rapish like 10k/10k.
