Honestly, I think the most press Affliction has gotten thus far is via people talking about Fedor in the UFC. There was an entire article in Time on the subject, and now Affliction is in the news again as main man Tom Atencio responds to Dana’s “Fedor will fight Brock” prophesy and claims Fedor ain’t going nowhere:
“They’re going, they’re good,” Atencio said regarding contract talks with Emelianenko and Co. “We’ve almost finalized it, but we just haven’t signed the papers. That’s really where we’re at. Everything is moving forward, it has nothing to do with anything but the fact that we’re just trying to make everybody happy, as I always do.
“We have a great relationship with them and we’re always going to continue on with that, and that’s why I’m not too worried about things.”
Atencio previously told us that he was working on an extension that would keep the soon-to-be 33-year-old under wraps for another three years.
“We’re gonna move forward with M1-Global, they’re our partners . . . we are looking to bring him on until 2012,” Atencio told us at the “Affliction: Trilogy” press conference last month.
So that’s three more years at two events a year at 2 million+ bucks loss per show. That’s mighty generous of Affliction to continue to throw these events when they’re so damn expensive. But I suppose when you know the world is obviously coming to an end in 2012, it makes sense. You can’t take that money with you when you’re raptured away to Mayan heaven or whatever is supposed to happen.
