According to his manager, Anderson Silva no longer has time for your average petty title defenses. At this point it’s superfight or bust:
“No opponent makes sense for Anderson at this moment. Unless we do a catchweight against Georges St. Pierre,” he suggests. “They didn’t offer the fight, but he’s the only one that could do a super fight. Anderson has the biggest paycheck in the UFC, and you can’t promote an event with these amateur kids that are coming up now”
On one hand, the UFC may have created a monster! If you were waiting for the first uber-rich primadonna athlete to raise his ugly head in the UFC, this may just be it. On the other hand, fuck yes! Whatever it takes to get us Anderson vs GSP! Make that fight happen, Anderson. Make it happen through sheer force of will!
Unfortunately, GSP is in no rush to move up and still wants to fight Nick Diaz. So we’ve got at least that plus Carlos Condit, plus all that time Georges says he’ll need to bulk up for the challenge. Anderson Silva might be cool with sitting out until then, but something tells me Dana White might not be. The UFC’s business model relies on their stars fighting, so what happens when those stars are making enough to thumb their noses at fights that’ll make them less than 5 million?
