While UFC middleweight pimp-daddy extraordinaire, Anderson Silva takes some time off to kick back and selfishly enjoy his life and/or accept a lucrative fight with GSP, the division he rules over with a despotic fist will not just sit around and wait. Silva himself said he wouldn’t mind if the UFC decided to create an interim belt in the meantime.
Michael Bisping, who has been calling for a title shot for years yet hasn’t defeated anyone who could plausibly warrant one, likes that idea a whole lot. He tweeted the following:
“@danawhite if Anderson wants to take time off to be a movie star make me and vitor for the interim title????”
Not so fast. If Silva is in fact going to be out for an extended period of time, then yes an interim title must be created. But I’m quite sure Chris Weidman and Tim Boetsch would also lay claim to it. The obvious solution: tournament.
Why not a quasi-middleweight tournament? Bisping and Vitor are already scheduled to tangle, as are Boetsch and Weidman, and all right around the same time too. Makes perfect sense. That would be a lot fairer than just handing Bisping a title shot because he’s been in the UFC a long time and “paid his dues,” whatever that means. Not to mention that Weidman is widely considered the top contender.
Plus, tournaments just kick ass…until injuries or any one of the million other things that could go wrong do.
