UFC 117 is just over a week away and many questions are left unanswered: will Anderson Silva’s performance be made up completely of crotch thrusts and sexy time faces? Will Chael Sonnen succeed in performing the world’s longest octogon hug? Will Oakland fans riot and tear Dana White limb from limb after one of these things happen? We just don’t know.
But one thing that was cleared up during Tuesday’s conference call was that there was no more Anderson Silva weightclass madness going on:
“If you want to beat me up, make weight and come fight me in my category, my division,” Silva said through his manager and interpreter Ed Soares.
“I haven’t gotten bored,” he said. “I like my sport. I like my weight division that I fight in, and I’m prepared to stay in my weight division.”
Moments later, Silva emphasized that not only was he not bored, but that he planned to be at middleweight for a long time to come.
“He said that I didn’t translate it exactly. He said he wants to retire fighting in his weight category,” Soares said.
Now just a few months ago Anderson was talking not just 205 but heavyweight and maybe even 170 so he could show GSP what Brazil nuts look like. But now ‘he likes his weight division’, which is strange because no one likes the middleweight division. And I don’t exactly see a big long list of hot new talent coming up. Just a bunch of go-nowhere TUF guys and the same dudes Anderson Silva has raped or could have raped if he still had that old rapist’s intensity.
