Big fight announcements have been few and far between over the past year, but one thing MMA fans have no shortage of are big fights not happening announcements. Ronda Rousey vs Cris Cyborg? No way, Jose. Georges St Pierre vs Anderson Silva? Dana White may be trying to Secret it into existence, but listening to GSP and those around him tell a different tale. And now a big announcement from Anderson Silva about Jon Jones!
“There’s always been a lot of talk about me moving up to 205,” said Silva, who successfully has defended his title a UFC-record 10 times. “I know (UFC president) Dana (White) has talked about it and all the fans have talked about me moving up and facing Jon Jones.
“But it’s something I’ve never wanted. I won’t be pretentious and say that I’d want to move up, especially because there are other guys in the weight class and on our team like Rafael Feijao (Cavalcante) and (Antonio Rogerio) Minotoro Nogueira, guys who could potentially face Jon Jones in the future.
“What got me this far is that I’m grounded; my weight class is 185 and I’m 37 years old. I feel I need to be honest and continue to build what I’ve built and that is to keep defending my belt at 185.”
Aaw man. This is nothing all that new, but Silva vs Jones has become the new superfight to make amongst fans who aren’t hung up over Silva / GSP. While Silva has casually brushed off the fight in the past saying shit like ‘Jon Jones eees mah freeind’, this is a much more definitive statement. He’s leaving the 205 pound division for his training partners to conquer, even though there’s a snowball’s chance in hell Feijao and Lil Nog could ever pull that off. It’s times like this I wish there was an I in TEAM.
