Dana White announced today via his standard highly professional media outlet that Vitor Belfort has pulled out of his fight with Cung Le at UFC 139 due to an undisclosed injury. But there’ll be no stay of execution for Le, as The Axe Murderer has taken over the killing duties.
Despite the decreased odds of Le’s untimely death, this fight makes a lot more sense to me than the original. Belfort’s crushing of Sexyama last month already showed that he’s still a top contender and very much a force to be reckoned with, so a guy like Cung Le represented nothing but a squash match for him. But Wandy’s coming off his own uber-quick destruction by Chris “Fatherless Bastard” Leben, has dropped 4 of his 6 UFC fights, and desperately needs to prove that his murderin’ axe is still sharp. If he can’t beat an aging paper tiger like Le, then there’s a strong chance he’ll be Liddell’d into retirement soon after… and I can’t say I’d disagree.
As for Vitor, he says he should be back in the cage in December. Which is only a few weeks after UFC 139, so I guess Jesus is already on the case but was just booked up until mid-November. Hallelujah!
