Bibiano Fernandes the latest fighter off UFC 149
As if you need more reasons to cry over the current Gypsy Curse 2012: Superhex situation, I just thought I’d lay out all the fights that were set to happen at UFC 149 that have poofed out of existence:
- Jose Aldo vs Erik Koch (for 145lb belt)
- Michael Bisping vs Tim Boetsch
- Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Thiago Alves
- Thiago Alves vs Siyar Bahadurzada
- Thiago Silva vs Shogun Rua
- Bibiano Fernandes vs Roland Delorme
Interestingly enough, Bibiano Fernandes isn’t off the card because he’s injured. Rather, he says he never signed a contract with the UFC. Apparently ONE FC offered him a ‘better deal’, and while he hasn’t officially signed with them either I don’t see the UFC going out of it’s way to bring him back to the table. The UFC has a long established negotiation style when it comes to fighters trying to play promotions against eachother. It goes like this: “F*ck em”

Have fun fighting nobodies in janky promotions that will not exist a year from now. You’d think he’d opt for the UFC because of the stability and potential to earn shit tons of money as he moves up the ladder. Not to mention all the sponsor money that would be rolling in (if he has a half decent manager who’s on the ball). And let’s not forget the stable of pro-ho groupies gets a little better when you’re a “UFC fighter”. B-Fern must have forgotten his recent pay problems where Dream didn’t pay him until over half a year after his fight with Hansen.
All of these one-off and “next-big-thing” promotions start off with everyone singing their praises with talks of “fantastic TV deals in place” and the oh-so important set of financial backers with “deep pockets”, but they ALL end up the same: tits up in 18 – 24 months with fighters and backers wondering where it all went wrong and where all the money went.

Maybe he’s betting on a Fertitta buy out if OneFC really does take off. Skip that whole work your way up the UFC ladder crap! Just sit pretty in Asia until Lorenzo and his chequebook show up and voila – honour the remainder of my deal beyatch! Nothing could go wrong with that plan.

Bobby Fernandes sounds like the name of an 80′s latino pop sensation.
And yeah, if Zuffa is playing hard ball with guys over 30K then yeah they are going to loose out on some decent international talent.
It doesn’t matter if these non UFC org’s are going to fail within 18-24 months. The fact of the matter is if you can make better money OUTSIDE the UFC fighting mediocre opposition that why wouldn’t you take advantage of that opportunity.
We fans may bitch about not seeing the best guys duke it out, but at the end of the day these fighters (the smart ones at least) are in it for the money. Maybe if Zuffa spent less time on the next season of TUF they could afford these guys. -
