Another free UFC event in Brazil, another near total lack of promotion for it. But at least this time they made a commercial for this weekend’s UFC on Fuel 10, aka TUF Brazil 2 Finale, headlined by the Big Nog vs Fabricio Werdum rematch.
It’s bad enough that two top-10 heavyweights disappeared for months to make a reality show that literally almost no one outside of Brazil could or would watch, but the minimal hype for their fight is disappointing. The ad is straight-up about what’s at stake here: a title shot for Werdum, and renewed relevance for Big Nog; but you’d have to be a fairly conscientious UFC fan to even be aware of it.
These two last fought in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Pride Openweight Grand Prix, which Cro-Cop later won (oh, those were simpler times). Nogueira earned the unanimous decision that night, but while Werdum has vastly improved since then, Nog is now like Pam Anderson: still capable of flashes of brilliance despite the years and mileage, but clearly well worn and past his prime.
The co-main’s TUF Brazil 2 finals pits William Macario (6-0), who finished almost all of his pro and TUF fights by TKO; against Leonardo Santos (11-3), who dropped a decision in the semis to Santiago Ponzinibbio (sp?), but caught a lucky break when Ponzi broke his hand.
But first, Thiago Silva tries to recover from a 4-fight no-contest/losing streak against Feijao Cavalcante, who coincidentally also had his last win NC’d after pissing dirty. At least Silva was only using weed instead of roids, though that hasn’t always been the case. I wonder if some enterprising bookmakers are taking bets on this fight getting overturned? The guys with the pee cups should be all over these two on Saturday night, but then again, it is in Brazil.
Rounding out the main card is Daniel Sarafian (who would’ve been a TUF Brazil 1 finalist if not for his own injury) facing newcomer Eddie Mendez, Erick Silva against Strikeforce (and UFC, Dream, and Affliction) veteran Jason High, and TUF Brazil 1 featherweight winner Rony Jason versus Mike Wilkinson.
