Oh, irony of ironies. The last time we saw Michael Bisping’s name here at Fightlinker, he was complaining that Alan Belcher was flopping around on the canvas a little too much after Bisping delivered a nasty eye poke that may forever change the way UFC gloves are made. Well, it seems The Count’s own body thought those words may have been a little unkind because Bisping’s own retina said “This is some bullshit,” and promptly detached itself from his right eyeball. Ariel Helwani reported on UFC tonight what went down with the traitorous retina:
After the fight against Alan Belcher, Michael Bisping completely lost all peripheral vision in his right eye. He went to see an eye on doctor on Tuesday and he found out that he had a detached retina. On Thursday, he had surgery to fix the detached retina. He’s hoping to return to the UFC in October.
Bisping also had a tune up on his neck this week, getting an epidural cortisone shot to relieve a nerve problem, but he doesn’t seem to be concerned about ring rust come his next bout. The middleweight gatekeeper and title hopeful had not been scheduled to fight anyone, but has been keeping busy by entertaining the ideas of fights against Rich Franklin, Costa Philippou, and Cung Le. Says Helwani:
Michael told me the guy who interests him most is Cung Le. He’s not interested in fighting Luke Rockhold and told him to go out and win at least one fight in the UFC before he talks to him.
Unranked Le would be a recognizable name but an odd choice for 4th ranked Bisping who is constantly whinging about getting a title shot. Waiting for Bisping would put Le almost a year out since his last fight, but hey, maybe by October everyone’s eyes will be safe with the new UFC Shooto gloves, right, Mike?
