BJ Penn calls Georges St Pierre a roider

BJ Penn is fighting Kenny Florian this weekend at UFC 101, but you wouldn’t really know it from the way he’s talking. Based on that, I think he still sees GSP dropping some beats on him every time he closes his eyes. Check out his latest comments:

Penn said he believes St. Pierre uses steroids, though he concedes he has no proof. St. Pierre is arguably the sport’s most popular fighter and Penn knows that making such allegations isn’t going to win him any friends.

Penn, though, isn’t the type to be shy about offering his opinion though it may be unpopular.

“It’s just my opinion that he uses steroids,” Penn said. “That’s it.

My opinion. I do believe it. I can’t hand you any proof, but that’s my opinion.”

In an earlier conversation on the topic, Penn said, “In my opinion, he doesn’t play by the rules when it comes to steroids and growth hormones and that stuff. Look at him. He’s the worst. He looks like that every day. That’s cheating. There is a reason why there are rules against using steroids. The rest of us, we get fat, then we train and get skinny and the cycle goes over and over again. He looks the same way all the time. Come on.”

BJ Penn went from calling Sean Sherk a roider to making a blanket statement about everyone else roiding to making very specific (and completely unsubstantiated) roiding claims about Georges. It reminds me of those awkward social situations where someone embarks down the racist joke road and it goes from being funny to awkward to painfully uncomfortable in the span of 2 minutes. We were down with the Sherk stuff, and if BJ wants to talk shit about the general problem of steroids in MMA, of course we’re behind him! But when you start this bullshit where you accuse individuals with no history and no evidence … well that’s just a witch hunt.

Georges’ people laughed at the allegation when asked about it by Kevin Iole, but I wonder if they’ll find it so funny once they see the allegations pasted across every corner of the MMA blogosphere and mainstream sports sites. There’s smacktalk and then there’s straight up defamation. But this is BJ Penn we’re talking about here. He also thinks that Vaseline cost him the GSP fight and over-training is a potential problem for him. He’s not an idiot, but he’s got a lot of strange ideas. And in the end, I think these ideas are gonna cost him a lot more fans than they will GSP.
