BJ Penn looks into his future and sees two more belts before retirement:
“People might think it’s a long shot from this point out, but I really would like to be the world champ again at 170 pounds, you know, and I try to hold out as long as I can and when I get knocked off, because everyone’s going to get knocked off, I’d love to go back to 155 and win one more time. If I could do that, I can go to sleep at night. It would be much easier, you know, I don’t know any specific names or whoever the champion is at that time, you know. … I really want to be world champ again. You know, I was watching Soul Surfer movie the other day, the girl (Bethany Hamilton) who lost her arm… and if she can go out and keep surfing professionally, I can go get another world title.”
I dunno … BJ Penn always seems one unsatisfactory performance away from retiring on a whim during the post fight interview. Even after being the first guy not named GSP to handle Jon ‘Hump King’ Fitch, he still acted like a dog who’d shit the bed.
Yeah, that third round wasn’t pretty, but Jon Fitch is huge and BJ is tiny. Welterweight wasn’t an easy place for him to hang in 2006 and it’s only gotten bigger, rougher, and meaner over the past five years. Hell, lightweight is such a walk in the park that guys like Kenny Florian are dropping to 145. Maybe if BJ said he’d take a run at the featherweight belt I’d get excited, but we all know how much he loves his pineapples and kalua pig. I think he’d rather pull a Soul Surfer and lose an arm to a shark than go on a proper diet.
