Blagoi Ivanov stabbed in the heart

Scary news regarding Blagoi Ivanov, the dude who parlayed a sambo win over Fedor Emelianenko into a pretty successful MMA career. The 6-0-1 fighter is in life-threatening condition after being stabbed in what sounds more like a straight up murder attempt than your standard bar fight:

Bulgarian sambo world champion and Bellator fighter Blagoi Ivanov has been stabbed and his life is in danger following a fight in a bar in downtown Sofia early Sunday morning.

Ivanov and two of his friends had just occupied their places in the bar on Graf Ignatiev Str., when a group of 8 persons armed with bats and knives came in and attacked them.

At 5.10 am police came in to find the attackers escaped and Ivanov with a deep stab wound under his armpit that reached to his heart.

The 25-year-old is currently treated in the Pirogov Hospital, his life is gravely endangered.

Ivanov’s two companions have suffered only light wounds and bruises and have been discharged by the hospital.

There have been rumors in the past that Ivanov was involved with some shady people in the Bulgarian underworld, and the suspects list in this case – a crime figure and his bodyguards – seems to confirm that. There’s a lot of different MMA scenes in North America full of bikers and gangsters and I imagine eastern Europe is similar but even crazier. Eight people beating you with bats and knives crazier, apparently.

Ivanov’s current condition is a bit murky, some sources say he’s critical, others stable, some critical but stable. The general consensus is he’s definitely not out of the woods yet and there are likely to be more complications over the coming hours and days. Here’s hoping Blagoi recovers, and maybe after this comes over to America where people are civilized enough to use guns instead of knives to settle their differences.

Is it safe to say Russain MMA fighters should abandon the nightlife altogether after this and that Black Tiger guys incident.

Russian night clubs and bars seem to be not worth the hassle/health risk.

  • DJ ThunderElbows

Yeah, clubs are where bad things happen to big tough guys.
