Boxing gets it done, books an actual good match

Well, I was pretty excited for the Joe Calzaghe / Bernard Hopkins boxing bout that was just announced, until I realized that they’re putting it on the same weekend that the UFC is in Montreal (April 19th, bitches). Oh well … it’s not like I’ll be sober enough that weekend to spoil the fight before I get to watch it on Sunday night or something.

For those of you who don’t know, Joe Calzaghe is my favorite boxer of all time, which isn’t really saying that much because I’ve only watched about 15 boxing matches in my entire life. But still, the guy is unconventional, aggressive and entertaining. Add in the fact that he and Hopkins have held titles for decades and you’ve got the makings of an epic bout between two veterans of the sport.

I don’t know what the fuck is up with boxing lately. The sport seems on an upswing, with more and more great bouts coming together. Bernard Hopkins actually thanked MMA for waking boxing promoters up and showing them what they needed to do to fix the sport, and I really think he might be right. The next six months of boxing is stacked with great bouts, title unifications, and surprisingly little drama. Well okay, there’s still drama. But at least the fights are actually getting booked and aren’t getting canceled.

  • fightlinker

Sadly enough yep I will be writing about TNA today :-p

Apparently TNA is set to promote the UFC (specifically 81) in their next upcoming Impact tapings..

Just thought I’d throw that out there.

I’m so sick of getting all pumped for white dude to beat up black dude, and black dude schooling white dude. I am cheering for Hopkins this time.

I’m seeing the date listed for the fight as April 12, which is much better.

  • Accomando

MMA’s explosion of popularity has been fueling the boxing comeback, bigtime.

Just at my bro’s amateur boxing match, of the 10 guys fighting, 8 came from MMA gyms, no joke. MMA made fighting cool again, even if the fighting is boxing.

update…they may go to Apr 19, but then it would be on HBO and not PPV, so I can DVR that shit and watch it after UFC. Perfect.

I think Accomando nailed it. One combat sport will help the other, as long as they make the fights we want to see.
