Browser Crasher: ADCC 2011

Andre Galvao submitting Pablo Popovitch via toehold to take the Gold in the Absolute Division.

I’m not some super grappling guru, so I’m not likely to fully appreciate the finer points of hand fighting, or smothering positional dominance, or a 5 minute war to pass guard.  I like the flashy shit.  Scrambles, takedowns, sweeps/reversals, submission attempts…  With that in mind, here are some of my favorite moments from the 2011 ADCC World Championships.

The Run of Rousimar Palhares

Palhares vs. Schon – -88kg Round 1

Palhares wins by submission – Heel Hook

LOOK AT THE HEIGHT ON THAT SLAM.  He crotch-lifts Schon like he’s nothing and sends the poor man hurtling down to Earth like a pasty white meteor.  A few moments later Paul did as Paul does and quickly ended the match with a sweet heel hook.

~~more jitziness after the break~~

Palhares vs. Avellan – -88kg Round 2

Palhares wins by submission – Heel Hook

No, this is not the winning submission.  They spin out of bounds and the ref is trying to restart them on the mat, but Paul doesn’t seem to understand and keeps torquing (sound familiar?).  For some reason this seems to piss Avellan off.

They’re restarted in the center of the mat in heel hook position, and from go, Palhares twists the everliving shit out of Avellan’s leg, making him tap immediately.  From his grimace of pain (and the way he hobbles off the mat) he appears to have a nasty ouchie.  Avellan posted “>a funny vid on YouTube where he tells his side of the story.  He says his knee “ripped and popped like 5 or 6 times” and that if he knew what he knows now, he would have just given up instead of restarting.  They also talk about Palhares clubbing him (an issue that will come up again for Paul) and wonder whether or not he’s actually retarded.

Toquinho reverses Avellan’s knee tap.  That’s serious horsepower.

Palhares vs. Lovato Jr. – -88kg Semifinals

Palhares wins by submission – Heel Hook

Palhares vs. Galvao – -88kg FINALS

Galvao wins on points, gets the Gold.

This was an awesome match.

Palhares plays rough, if you didn’t already know.  Lots of scrambles and takedowns, and lots of questionably legal slapping.  I think there was some controversy about Palhares bending back Galvao’s fingers to break his grip as well.  Galvao plays rough right back, and Palhares ends up losing a point (I think) for the continued slapping.  Toquinho does a lot of power moves,  and he starts to fade a bit as the match goes on.  Galvao is a fucking beast that never gets tired.  At the end it’s all smiles and good-hearted slaps between the two.  Galvao gets his first Gold at ADCC (later to get Gold in the Absolutes as well), and Palhares gets the Silver in his first foray at the ADCC Finals (Visa issues and injuries had prevented him from competing til now).

Mmmmm… Kyra Gracie

Kyra Gracie vs. Sara Svennson –  -60kg Round 1

Gracie wins via submission, Armbar

Kyra has dirty filthy nasty omoplatas.

Kyra Gracie vs. Takayo Hashi – -60kg Round 2

Gracie wins on points

As I said above.

Kyra Gracie vs. Michelle Nicolini - -60kg FINALS

Gracie wins via submission, Omoplata

This was a WAR, and one of the most technical battles of the entire competition.  I don’t know what the points were, but up until the finish I had Nicolini winning the match.  Gracie wins her 3rd ADCC Championship.

Hey Grappo–>FORGET YOU, MAN. Forget you………

And I clicked on ALL of the links. Most of the links.

Great work as always. You’ve done several key things that Dick doesn’t quite get: 1) Be entertaining 2) MORE AFTER THE BREAK 3) Didn’t try to hard 4) mention me which is always a recipe for success!!

  • Grappo

plus there’s a Mumm-Ra reference in there somewhere

  • iamphoenix

“and wonder whether or not he’s actually retarded.”

fucker you made me snort laugh.

ps. ive read words about galvao in sam sheridans books which are TL;Totally Read and it’s awesome seeing him win and shit still.

fuck the other dude i hate rolling with guys like that.

  • SST

I love these gif posts. Thanks for the hard work.

  • Reverend Clint

paul harris is such a retard… he has only one speed and no boundaries

  • iamphoenix

^didn’t know it was clint. your new clothes are weird.

  • KeyboardWarrior

Paul H is autistic and 100% of his brain goes towards being a dumb fuck, not jiu jitsu.

  • Grappo

It’s weird because in the UFC 134 Countdown show, Palhares seemed relatively well-spoken and introspective.  Just a cool down to earth dude.  But when he gets in competition mode he’s like a gorilla that knows jiu-jitsu.  I honestly don’t think he’s a dirty fighter, or stupid… but I can’t explain why he’s such a fuckin weirdo on the mats.  By the end of ADCC I think he became sorta like a mascot.  Even Pablo Popovitch wanted to get some of that monkeyslap action.

I think that’s just how he shows affection…  his poor mother.

  • DJ ThunderElbows

If he’s high-functioning then he’s just an asshole.  I understand the necessity of going for the kill in MMA, but in sub contests I think it makes you an asshole.

  • Redping

he’s pure asshole, and the kind of person who wouldn’t be allowed to train at my gym. but damn he’s hilarious to watch in the cage, you always know some crazy shit is about to go down when Paul Harris flexes.

I think he is genuinely a fairly mean person, you can’t behave like he does with any amount of empathy. weird that he could be so advanced at an art form that usually teaches you respect, and still be who he is. is there any word on who he’s fighting next in the UFC?

  • Grappo

I probably have my fanboy blinders on, but I just don’t get an asshole vibe from him.  Then again, I have no good explanation for his behavior either.  Maybe just desperation to succeed and provide for his family, and never have to go back to the life he had before.  Twisting shit off got him this far, so he’s gonna keep on twisting.  Plus he doesn’t have a lot of endurance.  Maybe he feels he has to end it quick and decisively.  I dunno.  I’ll keep making excuses for him as long as I can!

As far as who he’s fighting next… no word so far.  Lots of awesome potential matchups, especially if they bring some of the Strikeforce guys over.  Would love to see him against Jacare, or Rockhold, or Kennedy.  Then there’s Alan Belcher who didn’t break a sweat against MacDonald so he should be good to go.  The losers of Sonnen/Stann and Maia/Santiago…  any of these fuckers.  I just want to see him fight elite competition.  Ranked guys, not the Drwal/Branch/Linhares’s of the division.

  • DJ ThunderElbows

He needs to fight Sonnen.  But that’s personal.

I would kill to see this tardhole fight Jacare.  That’d be fucking dope.

  • frickshun

PS: I did notice the Mumm-Ra reference & this post is STILL FUCKING AWESOME.

You should keep Dick after school for some tutoring.

  • Grappo

Luckily I’m primarily a gif whore so I don’t have to eat shit about my writing quality (or lack thereof)

  • DJ ThunderElbows

I’m almost certain I asked you this once, but since I’m a forgetful process-junkie:  Do you use virtualdub for your work?

  • SST

Grappo, Is there a site where the whole matches are posted? I want to see the Paul Harris and Kyra Gracie matches.

  • Grappo

I’m almost certain I asked you this once, but since I’m a forgetful process-junkie:  Do you use virtualdub for your work?

Only for very rudimentary editing.  Vdub only cuts/trims accurately if the clip you’re saving is over 10 seconds long, and the space between cuts is more than 10 seconds as well.  Usually use it to isolate single fights from full events, and then use other software for precision editing.

Grappo, Is there a site where the whole matches are posted?

There was, but they’re all dead now unfortunately.  Maybe on torrents or something?   But I don’t use those or know shit about them.

  • iamphoenix

i know this one site that just came out. i’m not exactly sure how it works. but i’m pretty sure you can find what your looking for. I think this is the right link>>

    if it’s wrong i’m sorry.

  • frickshun

^^hahaha. I knew it was coming & it was STILL funny.

  • Reverend Clint

  • iamphoenix

too bad richard hates c level photochops.

  • SST

That was all I was finding too, dead links. I did find a gi match with Kyra and Nicolini, where Kyra lost on points.

  • CAP

Nice Clint! That actually fits pretty well.

  • Malgorzata

I have come to understand that enpexses for on-line degree experts tend to be an awesome value. For example a full 4-year college Degree in Communication from The University of Phoenix Online consists of 60 credits at $515/credit or $30,900. Also American Intercontinental University Online gives a Bachelors of Business Administration with a total program feature of 180 units and a tuition fee of $30,560. Online learning has made taking your higher education degree so much easier because you might earn the degree through the comfort of your dwelling place and when you finish from work. Thanks for all the tips I have learned through the blog.

Wеll to me Martial Arts means гespect аnd discірline.
I have trained in different Martіal arts noω
    fοr well аbove twenty yеаrs.
I have sеen various pеople come and go but one thing that I have nоticed will be the
resрect and disсipline which has changed thoѕe peopleѕ peгception
    оf life.
Small childгen that havе startеd thаt have been on the wгong side
of the tracκs, always in trouble and no idea how to resρеct other kids.
Ρlace them in a contrοlled enνironment with disсiрlіne and fighting and they sοon start
    to unԁеrstand.
Martial arts is one way for children and adults to get rid of their aggreѕsion without hurting or bullying anyone.
