Rob Evans snapping his leg in his first and last pro fight at Cage Rage 4.
Being that MMA is an extremely violent sport, horrific injuries are bound to occur. As fans, and as normal human beings, we never want that to happen. We don’t rejoice in a fighter’s pain and misfortune. That said, when it does happen, we sure as hell want to see it. Seeing a fighter in their worst moments; suffering the pain of injury for glory, money, and our entertainment… that can only serve to inform and make us more appreciative of what these people go through, and what they risk every time they step into the cage.
Have I qualified things enough yet to justify a long exploitative post about grisly fighter injuries?
-We bring the pain after the jump with tons of terrible owwies-
This is by no means an exhaustive list (it has to end somewhere) so if there’s a nasty mma leg injury that comes to your mind that I missed, post it in the comments!
Corey Hill vs. Dale Hartt @ Ultimate Fight Night 16
Corey made an arena-full of hardened soldiers’ buttholes pucker that night. Hartt checked that kick nicely. High on the shin, leg slightly angled out… perfect for breaking skinny legs.
Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons vs. Brian Gassaway @ TKO 32
The last in the Holy Trinity of nasty MMA tibia breaks, Pele gets rubber-leg’d. The worst part of all three is when they bring their legs back and try to stand on them. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Here it is in real time where you also get to see Gassaway’s horrified reaction.
Jared Hess vs. Alexander Shlemenko @ Bellator 20
Look at that shit. Look at THIS shit. It seriously makes me want to vomit.
“Windy” Tomomi Sunaba vs. Rosi Sexton @ BodogFight Costa Rica Combat
Poor Windy fell wrong and BADLY dislocated her ankle when she landed on it. She was airlifted to a hospital and had surgery performed that same day. She spent four more months in a hospital in Japan, having two more surgeries on her ankle (one corrective, one because of a bone infection). It would be almost a year before she made it back into the ring. Check out Trevor Prangley’s reaction. That’s about right. Another angle.
Jason DeLucia vs. Joe Slick @ UFC 23
I don’t know the extent of DeLucia’s knee injury, but he looks pretty fucked. It’s like he got Cro-Cop’d but without the benefit of being unconscious, and with a 200 lb. man dropping all his weight down on top of you.
Serin Murray vs. Megumi Fujii Smackgirl: Legend of Extreme Women
Poor girl with no grappling experience got Megumi F’ing Fujii in her MMA debut. Mega Megu snapped Murray’s ankle with a vicious toe hold. Murray subsequently said F this MMA shit and went on to a successful career in Muay Thai.
Now, let the parade of heel hooks begin!
Kazuo (Yoshiki) Takahashi vs. Bas Rutten – Pancrase: Road to the Championship 1
What you’re seeing here is our beloved Bas breaking Yoshiki’s legwith a heel hook. Yoshiki is in pain, but not sure of the damage until later when he stands up and throws a kick. Look at his shin wobble on impact with Bas’ leg, and again when he tries to stand on it. According to Bas, Yoshiki’s leg ended up getting infected, and he spent 6 months in the hospital.
Eddie Alvarez vs. Shinya Aoki @ Dynamite!! 2008
Just a lil ligament damage, no biggie.
Leon Dijk vs. Ken Shamrock @ Pancrase: Eye of the Beast
Here we see Dijk in his 2nd pro fight, getting his ankle completely wrecked by Shammy. Totally jacked. Ken twisted it around 180 degrees, ripping muscle and tendons from the bone, and putting Dijk in rehabilitation for 9 months.
Lest we forget Shammy destroying Pat Smith’s Knee at UFC 1.
Or Shamrock raping Don Frye’s legs at Pride 19. This is another rare case where the injury doesn’t immediately signal the end of the fight. Frye spent about half the fight in heel hooks, but he gutted it out and ended up winning a split decision. According to Frye, those leg locks had broken both of his ankles, and he later developed a serious painkiller addiction as a result of the continuing pain issues. Just tap motherfucker! We get it, you’re a badass. But you’re more badass without a limp and a drawer full of illegal scrips.
Jorge Gurgel vs. Masakazu Imanari @ ZST GP Opening Round
If Imanari gets hold of your leg, one of two things is likely to happen. Either you’ll get lucky and just end up tenderfooting it for the next week or so, or you’ll find yourself on the operating table, getting a dead man’s knee ligament sewn into you. It was the latter for Mr. Gurgel.
Mike Brown vs. Masakazu Imanari @ Deep 22
Brown getting his knee dislocated by the Ashikan Judan. Heel hooks are srs fuckin biz. Here it is in slo-mo.
—More Imanari knee wreckage—
Fabio Nascimento vs. Rousimar Palhares @ Fury FC 5
With all these heel hooks, we can’t forget about our favorite jacked-up Monchhichi, Toquinho. When he gets hold of your leg he just doesn’t wanna let go. I want to hate him for being such a dickhead, but I can’t. He’s too awesome.
