Catchweight, middleweight, wherever

Anderson Silva’s manager Ed Soares confirms that they’re not standing in the way of a GSP / Silva superfight:

“There’s nothing from our side that’s preventing it. Pretty much to be honest with you, there’s never been anything from our side from preventing any fight. We have our opinions but at the end of the day, whomever the UFC has put in front of us, we’ve always fought. We’ve never picked opponents. We might have had, you know, when they ask us what our choices are, we may have different choices or different opinions, but we’ve always fought whomever they’ve put in front of us. So if the UFC wants us to fight Georges St. Pierre, fine, you know. Anderson says ‘hey, have him move up in weight, or we’ll do a catchweight, whatever.’ But it’s really up to the UFC, not up to us.”

I know, I know. It’s not cool to keep bringing up this fight that will obviously never happen. But the least I can do is make sure everyone knows WHY it’s not happening. And hey, if you believe Dana White, it’s not even Georges holding things up. They’ve never even sat down and talked about the match. Because that makes complete and total sense. Now excuse me while I go hit myself in the head with a hammer.

Notice how he didn’t mention welterweight.  Neither side is ever going to make the complete switch to the other division.

Probably a good thing, considering a champion having two belts is ludicrous for the sport.  Awesome as a fan to watch, but the aftermath pretty much blows.  It means that both belts will be defended at least half as often, as it will probably alternate between weights every other fight.  I hope you like non-title main events, because this kind of thing is the recipe for them.

If one guy vacates the title to move up/down to challenge the other, this will be the greatest fight to ever happen in MMA.

make them fight at super hw or do it open weight with pride rules

Soares is so full of crap , “anderson will fight anyone the UFC puts in front of him”… except his friend Lyoto… or someone he doesn’t have a huge weight advantage over and is intimidated by like Jon Jones

  • KeyboardWarrior

I doubt they’ve ever asked him to fight Jones, but I bet he would for the right money. And he’ll probably lose, but who else besides Silva, Dos Santos and Velasquez would stand a chance against Jones.

GSP would have to Fitch Anderson to win. The size difference is there and the striking level difference is there too.  We know Silva has a weakness against takedowns and Okami will show it. I can totally see GSP win if he can get Anderson down but I also think GSP getting into the range to take him down is where things could go horribly wrong.

I am not too sure where Jon Jones would have holes against Silva. It is hard to say at this point because Jones up to now has only had WTF fights (opponents end up in the WTF mode within a minute of the fight starting). Rampage will test Jones and even if he doesn’t win will show us if Jones is mortal or if we should start naming our first borns after him.

I doubt this fight will happen with the two fighters in their prime. The more time goes by the more it makes sense for Anderson to transition to LH permanently. If Jones is still a half god at that point, things will get interesting.

We also have to start preparing mentally for the fact that both of the fighters are getting older and we will eventually see them get beat. The alternative to that is retiring on top which would have us SCREAMING bloody murder.

Right now for the Silva camp this fight does not make sense. He has everything to lose and not much to gain. If he wins, it will be chalked up to size advantage. For the GSP camp it is too much of a dangerous fight. The possibility of losing is very high and the most probable path to winning is forcing a boring fight which they know will never satisfy the fans and piss them off more than anything else.

I don’t see how either camp will ever run after this fight. We came close to seeing it after the Kos fight but then we got Jake. In the meantime, the fresh meat in both divisions has been refreshed and interesting fights seem to be in the horizon for the next year or so for both men whether they win  or lose.

KBW: They haven’t asked him to take the fight because when fans started mentioning it after Jones beat Shogun Anderson came out and said he wouldn’t take the fight even though it hadn’t been officially offered yet he made it clear he wanted no part of it.

GSP actually has contenders to keep him busy with Diaz and Condit hopefully. Anderson is pretty clear after Okami so him moving up would be best. I would love to see him fight Hendo at LHW.
