It was not the Bellator 172 event anyone expected to see, but the show went on anyway.
Hours before the first fight, officials announced that Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione was off due to Mitrione becoming ill. The two were set to headlint the event from San Jose’s SAP Center in Spike.
In place of Fedor’s Bellator debut, lightweights Josh Thomson and Patricky “Pitbull” Freire collided, with Freire scoring a second round finish.
The two collided moments before Freire landed a finishing uppercut, butting heads.
Cheick Kongo scored a decision victory over Oli Thompson in the co-main event, while Josh Koscheck’s long-awaited Bellator debut ended in the first round at the hands of Mauricio Alonso.
