Conor McGregor is off the social welfare

Conor McGregor had his coming out party this weekend at UFC Sweden and not only is he an impressively accurate striker with knockout power in his hands, he seems like quite a charming lad to boot. Dana White likes him so much he’s already been pencilled in for the UFC’s big Boston event in August, and in the meantime Conor will have a little more money than he’s typically used to:

“To be honest, I don’t know what’s going on here,” McGregor said with a laugh. “I’m just up here hearing $60,000. I’m just thinking of what I’m going to spend it on. Maybe a nice car and some suits or something, some custom-made suits. I don’t know.

“I don’t have f—ing money. I didn’t have money before this. I was collecting €188 a week off the social welfare. Now here I am with like $60,000 bonus and my own pay. I don’t know what the f–k is going on to be honest.”

What’s going on is Conor is set to become Ireland’s first cagefighting star, and if his next few fights don’t reveal any crippling holes in his game (are the Irish as bad at wrestling as the Brits?) he could be a pretty big deal regardless of your geographic location. Who wouldn’t love a guy who looks like they thawed a Celtic warrior out of a glacier and taught him to box?
