Unless you were willing to stay up until 7am to watch Sengoku limp through another mediocre event, there wasn’t a lot going on this weekend. Fortunately, even when things are slow there’s enough testosterone floating around the sport that something interesting is bound to happen, like soon-to-be UFC lightweight Donald Cerrone getting into a fistfight with a guy fighting in the main event of a local card:
“UFC 155 lb fighter Donald Cerrone was involved in a backstage brawl at the Evolution Combat Sports event in Clovis New Mexico event. The brawl was apparently about a young lady now dating Donald Cerrone who used to date main event fighter of the evening Marcus Sursa. Comments were exchanged after Sursa returned from a trip to the rest room and Cerrone was over seeing the warm-ups of several Jackson MMA fighters on the card this night, some words were exchanged by the two and then a shove followed by Cerrone throwing a punch causing a laceration on the eye of Sursa, he responded with a punch cutting the lip of Cerrone.
All told, Sursa was now out of the main event tonight against Buddy Roberts of Reno, NV due to the cut he suffered. This was the only negative i saw, during a great first effort by the fledgling effort of Martin and Sam Singletary known as the Evolution Combat Sports Championships.”
Cerrone might want to be a bit more careful now that he’s no longer a big fish in a small pond. He recently got in trouble for a “I want my opponent to die in the cage / PS he’s a fag” one-two combo leading up to his rematch with Jamie Varner, and any time you get into a fistfight outside the cage you risk being made an example out of. Considering the competition upgrade Donald’s about to start facing, it doesn’t seem like a good idea to add an extra strike against you before you’ve even arrived in the UFC.
