Cris Cyborg renews Strikeforce contract

Strikeforce 145lb womens’ champion and all-around scary asskicker Cris “Cyborg” Santos is staying in Strikeforce after all. Per

Despite conflicting reports recently as to whether Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos has departed ways with Strikeforce,  her manager Master Rudimar Fedrigo has confirmed to FCF today that the 145lb. champion has renewed her contract with the promotion.

Followers of this story will know that as of a week ago the chances of seeing Cyborg in a Strikeforce cage again weren’t looking so hot, so they either agreed to cough up the cash she deserves as the leading candidate for the title of best female MMA fighter in the game (unlikely), or those greener non-Strikeforce pastures turned out to look more like Stockton, CA (very likely).

Either way, Cyborg choosing to remain in the Strikeforce fold coupled with the recent signing of top prospect/focus of harrowing fightlinker nightmares Ronda Rousey makes this a pretty big week for the world of top-level WMMA. There’s still the small matter of finding someone to actually step into the cage with Cyborg and fight, but that’s the type of problem guys like Sean Shelby are very good at solving.

*UPDATE* MMA Junkie reminds us it’s not ‘official’ yet:

If Strikeforce women’s middleweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos has signed a new deal with the promotion, company officials aren’t saying so.

A representative told that Strikeforce “doesn’t have any official word on the contract status of ‘Cyborg’ at this time.”

But I bet it’s just dotting I’s, crossing T’s, and sending consolation cards to Gina Carano that say ‘Sorry about your chances of winning a belt now’

Rousey has said that she’d like to have 5 or 6 fights before fighting Cyborg/for the title…  who’s left in the Strikeforce women’s MW division?  Budd, Nunes, *Carano… a blown up Julie Kedzie?  De Randamie is another 135’er fighting above her weight.  It’s unfortunate that Ronda doesn’t feel that she can healthily make a weight lower than 145.

Yeah, you gotta feel bad for all involved. It’s interesting…I was thinking the other day that we’re watching the  same sort of thing that happened with the BW/FW/LW mens’ divisions in the late 90s and early ’00s, except there’s not a strong overseas scene for these fighters to flock to like there was back then. But the fighting outside of natural weightclasses, the dearth of opponents is analagous. Hell, Kid Yamamoto used to take fights at 155 because there was nobody to fight at 145 *or* 135. I hope the WMMA problem resolves itself in the same positive way that the saga of the lighter mens’ weightclasses did.

Where the hell is she going to get a better deal? Girlfights MMA?

There was some talk of her doing pro wrestling in the WWE, actually.

Part of me still thinks Strikeforce low balled her because they don’t want her to sign that way they can promote the more marketable “hot chicks” that casual fans love to follow

they just need more fights to build awareness and exposure, bellator had frausto fight in a dark match earlier this year ffs.

be it a barn burner or one sided snoozefest you have to let the fights play out, if a fighter is a title holder you have to show their fights
