Cung ain’t got nothing on Frank

A few days ago, Josh Thompson had this to say about the sparring sessions that would go on between Frank Shamrock and Cung Le:

When he used to spar with Frank back in the day, a lot of people will remember that he used to throw Frank around like a rag doll, like his little sister. It was almost a joke how bad he worked Frank over back then. I am sure Frank remembers that. Cung is a good wrestler, has great throws and he kicks like a mule.

Now before you believe that source, you should probably remember that Josh Thompson doesn’t like Frank Shamrock. He got suspended by the CSAC for wearing a ‘Frank Glamrock is my bitch’ shirt, and then Frank Shamrock punk’d him by outing him as gay during a Strikeforce broadcast.

Oh, and then there’s the fact that Cung Le has never thrown anyone around. The idea that he can throw someone like Frank Shamrock around is pretty far fetched standing on it’s own.

Of course, Frank Shamrock isn’t the kind of guy to let that kinda talk float around without a response of some sort, and thus we have the video above which apparently shows Cung and Frank sparring. It’s pretty dark and grainy so most of the time I can’t really tell who’s who but the general point of the video I think is that either Frank beats Cung up or Cung’s shots have no power?

Eh, I love Frank but his latest Cung smack videos have lacked the same sizzle as his Baroni ones.

  • Fightlinker is Wrong

Fightlinker is Wrong will always deliver unlike Fightlinker who is always deriver…tive. Well I fucked that up but take this shit bitch!

  • Mapultoid

Frank’s losing his touch. This is a sparring session and it looks an awful lot like Cung is being nice.

  • Captain

    Rory Singer is openly gay?

  • Swedish guy

Ehrm, FL, if you haven’t seen Cung Le throw anyone around then I certainly don’t know where you were when he was in K-1, fiddling around with San Shou rules in some sort of special exhibition fights.
He threw people left and right back then. Still, he’ll lose this fight, I’m not saying he won’t, just saying he has been throwing people around.

  • FightStinker is RIGHT!

Frank Shamrock needs to be more funnier!

  • Swedish guy

Tried to find one of his old San Shou fights on the youtubez, but all I could find was this exhibition stuff. Still, it shows that he can throw people. He’s a muscular dude but no, he won’t be able to throw Shamrock like this.

  • fightlinker

I dunno if him doing that in sanshou = him being able to do it in MMA. I’ve never really seen anything past some flashy but ineffective kicks from Cung in MMA.

Regardless, i’m gonna put that vid in tonight’s JackalTV and see what everyone thinks!

  • FightStinker is RIGHT!

    ineffective kicks?

Fightlinker Don’t make me whop a hoe, Okay?

  • Fightlinker is Wrong

    I see the fear…

  • fightlinker

Tony Fryklund + Sam Morgan … took three rounds for Cung to finish them off with constant kicks. And I still wonder if Fryklund was told to just stand and take an ass whupping.

  • FightStinker is RIGHT!

thats your problem. You wonder too much.

Cung Le is like the modern day MMA Chris Hansen.

  • Swedish guy

Like I said too FL, I don’t believe either he’ll be able to throw anyone inside an MMA cage/ring/pit. All I’m saying is he can throw (and suplex someone to land on his very own head, check out the vid) but probably won’t.

  • FightStinker is RIGHT!

it’s too risky of a move. Plus who wants to throw their genitals at their oppenents anyways?

  • fightlinker

Well, being able to do something outside of MMA isn’t really all that impressive in an mma context :-p

Although i will give you i should have put ‘in MMA’ next to the ‘never thrown anyone around’ thing

  • Fatal Error

Cung Le is an awesome kickboxer, but he doesn’t seem to have the power to finish a fight in mma. In San Shou, he would toss guys like ragdolls and wear them down. In mma, his scissor leg takedown will take him to a place he doesn’t want to go with Frank (heel hook land), and all of his other throws will leave him in Frank’s guard. His ground skills haven’t evolved to match his standup and that is a huge problem when you’re facing a guy that is well versed up and down.

    – Frank by TKO due to ground strikes round 2.

  • cyphron

A one sided video by Frank with a lot of cutting. I think Cung has a chance by virtue of Frank being an overrated piece of shit.

Shamrock is a liar….funny how in 2001 he was kissing Cung’s ass and talking about how Le dropped him on his head like 20 times the first time they sparred….

“Well, he threw me on my head about 20 times in the first round. And he got tired of throwing me on my head, so he started kicking me and throwing me on my head. After a few more rounds, we hugged and said, ÔBye.’

  • MadMan

Shamrock will totally smash Cung Le…
    it’s sooo fucking obvious.

  • Higgz

Hey, who said you could bring valid sources to this discussion? Unfair…on with the talking out of our asses and speculation!

  • fightlinker

There’s certain people you should never believe re: skill

    1) Guys who hate you
    2) Guys who love you

Frank’s been on both sides. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. But from what I’ve seen of Cung in MMA, there’s no way he’ll take Frank Shamrock out. No way in freaking hell.

  • FightStinker is RIGHT!

and this is coming from a guy who can’t even predict a fight between Chris Hasen and Rampage Jackson.

  • RL Dookiefuck is RIGHT!

Why does anyone think Shamrock is still a good fighter?

Because he beat up the New York Badass almost a year ago? Because he stalled and cheated his way into a loss against Renzo?

  • fightlinker

He SMASHED Baroni. Literally destroyed him in every possible way. Plus he was kinda freaking amazing back when he was in the UFC. I don’t think he’s unstoppable by any means … but I do think he’s going to route cung le.
