I know we’ve been bitching and whinging about how Strikeforce has been handling women’s MMA for the past week or two, but sometimes shit happens that’s just out of your control. In this case, that ‘shit’ is Cris Cyborg potentially being taken off the November 7th card on CBS with an unspecific injury.
Strikeforce officials hoped to build off the momentum Santos built with her first-round TKO of Gina Carano in August. But the Brazilian fighter has been slowed by injury and probably won’t be cleared for the nationally televised event.
“I’m awaiting her return from Spain to get her assessed by a doctor here,” Wilner said. “Out of respect to Strikeforce, CBS and Cris’ potential opponent, we alerted them to this issue early so as not to interfere with pre-production, preparation, etc.”
Santos should know the doctor’s decision later in the next few days.
Cyborg was actually in action last weekend at the ADCCs and managed to place 3rd in the women’s 60kg+ category. Congrats to her, although it will certainly suck if she misses the CBS show on account of an injury suffered in the tournament. Having her off the CBS card is already poop for WMMA, and I’m not really holding my breath on the hope that Strikeforce replaces Cyborg vs Coenen with another female fight.
