Dana White Critical Of Phil Davis, Happy With UFC 172

UFC president Dana White admitted that the three bonuses handed out for UFC 172 would not be the extent of his check-giving ways after all the action that went down.

The event drew a sellout to the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, and the crowd was “amazing,” according to the boss.

“It was a great card, with great submissions and great knockouts,” he said. “It was a great night.”

The main event saw Jon Jones successfully defend his light heavyweight title with a clean sweep of the scorecards over Glover Teixeira. The fact that Jones earned his seventh title defense didn’t surprise White as much as the way he did it.

“I expected Glover to take it to him and try to bang, and for Jon to take it to the ground,” White said. “Jon stood with him the whole fight.

“If the (Alexander) Gustafsson fight didn’t prove it, Jon has a chin-and-a-half on him.”

Jones “put on a clinch” he said, adding that he “did whatever he wanted.”

As for when the rematch between Jones and Gustafsson might go down, no time frame has been discussed, but White did seem fine with it possibly going down in Europe. Gustafsson is from Sweden, and he claimed the fight would be “massive” if done overseas.

In the co-main event, Anthony Johnson returned to the UFC and dominated Phil Davis, surprising many. “Rumble” personally thanked White after for taking him back after three failed weigh-ins during his first run.

“He looked good,” White said of Johnson. “I kept expecting him to gas out, but he took his time, picked his punches and stuffed every takedown. He looked good.”

As for what might be next, White mentioned that a possible Johnson vs. Daniel Cormier match could be signed if Cormier defeats Dan Henderson next month.

White also remarked that he was disappointed in Davis, saying, “he just doesn’t seem to have that dog in him, that desire to take the title. Hopefully this setback lights the fire.”

In another main card bout, Luke Rockhold submitted Tim Boetsch in a matter of moments, and did it “without messing up his hair,” White remarked.
