Leading up to the UFC on FOX 4 event this past weekend, UFC boss Dana White had said the winner of the Shogun/Vera fight would become the number one contender. Considering Vera has struggled to make his mark at 205, MMA fans rightly took him to task for that. So White upped the ante for all involved by then declaring that the light-heavyweight who won most impressively would get the shot, including Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader into the mix. Machida was the guy who won most impressively so he will be next to contend for the title, after Jones and Dan Henderson settle up next month.
Well, MMA fans being the most fickle of spectators, many are still not pleased. White sympathetically addressed their concerns in an interview with Inside MMA:
“Don’t watch it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. It’s what everyone said about this card. All these geniuses who have all the answers are judging cards before they happen. You don’t judge something until after it happens. To judge it before is completely stupid.”
White has a love/hate relationship with the fans. He does listen to us when we bitch and whine about stuff…up to a point. Then he gets irritated and does whatever he does. Dana is much like Colonel Jessup in that he has neither the time, nor the inclination to explain himself to fans who rise and sleep under the very blanket of the MMA that he provides, then questions the manner in which he provides it. He’d rather you just said ‘thank you’ and went on your way. Either way, he doesn’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
Dana is no dummy. Machida is the best option here. And it doesn’t even matter. If Jones wins, people are going to buy. If Henderson wins, people are going to buy. White eats breakfast 300 yards from 4000 fans who are trained to taunt him. So don’t think for one minute that you can go online, talk some shit, and make him nervous.
