With Matt Mitrione stepping up to face Roy Nelson at the TUF 16 Finale, his deliciously named original opponent Phil De Fries was out an opponent for the UFC’s big NYE event. That opened the door up for a late replacement, and shocker of shockers, Todd ‘Duffman’ Duffee is the guy the UFC brought in:
Former heavyweight prospect Todd Duffee is returning to the UFC. Duffee (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will meet Phil De Fries (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC 155, this year’s version of the annual New Year’s Eve weekend card in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
UFC officials confirmed the booking Wednesday afternoon. Duffee’s reunion with the UFC is as unexpected as his release from the promotion in May 2010.
The UFC cut Duffee after he lost in shocking fashion to Mike Russow at UFC 114. Duffee dominated the fight for 12 minutes before Russow knocked him out cold in the third round with a right hand.
Duffee was fired for murky reasons that boiled down to ‘a shitty attitude.’ He complained about money and turned down a fight to film the movie Never Back Down 2, two things you don’t get away with unless your middle name is Rampage. He was also one of the first fighters to get a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone, which just underscoring how ridiculous that whole system is. Look at the fucking guy. He has muscles on his muscles.
That being said, the guy is still a monster of a heavyweight and it’s nice to see him get another shot at the big show. If he’s going to fail at his career it should be because he couldn’t hack it in the cage, not because he pissed the wrong people off.
