Evan Tanner’s being thrown in the deep end

Let’s play good news / bad news. Good news: Evan Tanner is fighting in Montreal. Bad news: Evan Tanner is fighting Yushin Okami in Montreal. After watching all of Yushin’s fights in the UFC, we pretty much know what to expect from him: agressive wrestling, gradual damage over the course of three rounds, and maybe a few armlock attempts for good measure.

On the other hand, what the fuck are we to expect from Evan Tanner? According to Tanner, this is the first time he’s actually been training fulltime. Plus you can’t discount the fact that he’s off the sauce. On the other hand, who knows where his head is really at right now?

All of these question marks make me worry for Evan. The UFC seems to have decided they’ll throw Tanner into the deep end to see if he’ll swim. They certainly don’t need another so-so middleweight who can’t beat top competition, so it does make sense that they aren’t gonna waste time. Tanner also represents the best threat at middleweight for Okami past Hendo and Anderson. You know the UFC is freaking out at the prospect of Okami landing a belt – he must be stopped at all costs! So if that means putting Tanner to the test, then so be it. I just hope he’s up for it.

    Man I hate Okami.

I don’t HATE Okami, and I respect his skill – he has some really good wrestling and he’s incredibly strong. I find his style to be really boring, though, and while some guys have a generally boring style that can turn exciting with the right matchup, Okami seems to be able to turn any match into a snoozer. I’d like to see him face someone strong and fast enough with good enough wrestling credentials to force him to stand and throw. Too bad the whole division is a mess.

Evan’s advantage is that Okami is predictable, but no one knows what Evan brings to the table. This means if he’s smart he’ll come in with a plan to neutralize Okami’s strengths. If he works like a motherfucker on Jared Rollins style elbows from the bottom then that’d be a tool that could be really useful.

Okami hasn’t fought anyone with good wrestling. Swick? No. Belcher? Puh-lease. Starnes? Nuh-uh. Singer? *GIGGLES* MacDonald? Whateva. Franklin? Meh, and he suplexed the shit out of Yushin.

    Tanner by clinch destruction.

The UFC has got to be scared of giving Okami a title shot??? They will prevent it if they have to. They will force him to win fight after fight till he loses.

How the hell can they market someone lke Okami. Not only having the personlity of a grapefruit, he cant speak English, rarely speaks at all, and is boring all hell to watch.

Then again it might be funny watching Silva beat Okami to a pulp

  • fightlinker

I have faith that Silva would beat Okami. Tanner is the last stop for okami before a title shot, so lets hope Evan stops him first.

Man, I have some of Okami’s earlier fights in D.O.G., and he seems like another fighter. He destroyed everyone in exiciting fashion! He threw hard combos and a bunch of high kicks back then. Don’t know if it has to do with level of competition, or what…

so if Tanner wins do you think he will get a shot?

The only shot Tanner is getting if he wins is a Jack Daniels! BADOOMTSH!
