Four weeks from now, Josh Burkman will fight in the main event of the third World Series of Fighting event on the nationally-syndicated NBC Sports network. He faces a familiar opponent in UFC castaway Jon Fitch, whom he suffered a second-round submission loss to seven years ago at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas – the same venue the World Series of Fighting will visit next month.

Burkman has enjoyed much success since a three-fight losing skid in 2008 cost him his position with the UFC. He has won seven of eight fights since then, including the recent demolition of 12-time UFC veteran Aaron Simpson under the World Series of Fighting banner. A win over Jon Fitch next month would not only leave Burkman alone atop the World Series of Fighting’s welterweight fold but would also solidify his claims as one of the ten best welterweights anywhere. If you ask Burkman, though, he has much more to win.

Fitch beat me worse than anybody's ever beat me in my career inside or outside the cage. He beat me at a time when I was probably buying my own hype a little too much and I definitely underestimated Fitch and overestimated myself. That's where my career started to go up and down and it's a fight that I performed well under my abilities and now coming back in my career, it's just a fight that I want back. I think every fighter wants a chance to avenge his losses.

Since his UFC tenure, Burkman has relocated to his home of Orem, Utah, where he is part of the Pit Elevated fight team alongside UFC fighters Court McGee, Ramsey Nijem and Steven Siler. According to Burkman, the linkup with the Pit was a byproduct of McGee – another native Utahan – working with Chuck Liddell on the eleventh season of the Ultimate Fighter.

I’m a much different fighter now and having that performance that I had will not only help me avenge that loss but will also [help me prove] I’m one of the top welterweights in the world. That's my ultimate goal, to prove that I'm one of the top fighters in the world and I think the World Series of Fighting has given me an opportunity to climb that platform by bringing Jon Fitch in. He's a top ten guy in the world.”

Last time out, Burkman fought an NCAA Division I All-American wrestler in Aaron Simpson. Jon Fitch is also a grappler, though according to “The People’s Warrior,” one with a style better accustomed to mixed martial arts. Regardless the credentials held by Jon Fitch, Burkman feels like he will be able to not just defeat Fitch, but also finish him.

I think I can deal with Fitch. I fought him before and I know the mistakes I made against him. I'm a much different fighter now than I was then. At the same time, it seems like Fitch has taken his wrestling into MMA a little better than Aaron Simpson did. He used his wrestling to set up his hands, Jon Fitch has great standup but he also uses wrestling to transition to jiu-jitsu, a much different style and a much different problem than Simpson posed.

I'm excited to see [Jon Fitch’s approach] myself. I really feel that I'm better now than I've ever been, better than I've been in my entire career. I think after we both come out that Jon Fitch might try to press the action – and I hope he does that. After the first minute of the first round, Jon Fitch is going to realize he’s in there with a completely different fighter and I’m going to be able to find some openings and put myself into some good positions. The more he does that the more than I’m going to be able to hurt him and I think over the first round and a half I'll really be able to start to break Jon Fitch down and I’m definitely going to stop it. I don’t think this fight will go to a decision – I think I'll stop him before the fight goes the distance.

Fight fans appreciate good fights and I think World Series of Fighting is giving fight fans really good fights and fights they want to see. The big thing for World Series of Fighting is that three-year deal with NBC sports. NBC Sports came in and bought Versus to have a TV station for the Olympics and I read that that station is in 80 million homes. That's what makes the WSOF unique in an upstart promotion is they got that TV deal. The World Series of Fighting, when I signed on with them my goal was to be a future fighter in their organization, not use their organization as a stepping stone to get somewhere else. I am coming off wins over Gerald Harris, Aaron Simpson and now I have a chance to become a top welterweight in this promotion with a win over Jon Fitch. I absolutely want to represent this brand right and I've been told the better the fighters do this better this organization does and the better the organization does, the better for us fighters.

Josh Burkman is set to become the only three-time WSOF veteran with his appearance at WSOF 3. Finding a home has been a difficult task for many ex-UFC fighters but Burkman has renegotiated his contract and will call the World Series of Fighting home for at least four more fights.

They were very open to it and when they signed Jon Fitch, they let me redo my contract again. It’s nice having a president like Ray Sefo because he knows where the fighters are coming from. They listened to me and they gave me a new contract, so I've got a four fight deal with them. I'm very happy with this organization and where it's going and I'll be around with them for a while.

Competition for the UFC is healthy and I think that for me, I’m coming up to the best part of my career over the next couple of years and I’m grateful for the WSOF for giving me a platform to perform on and I also think that I’m going to prove that one of the best fighters in the world is not on the UFC but in another organization.

MMA's Great Debate Radio checks in with Jon Jones' manager Malki Kawa to see what the young fighter's plans are for the rest of the year. Transcription via MMA Weekly:

“For right now, he’s just anxious to get that boot off and make sure his toe is good to go. As long as he feels good coming off that boot and when he goes to put pressure on it, he can walk without a boot, and his toe is strong and everything’s good there then it shouldn’t (delay his return). One thing about Jon is he’s not going to take any chances whatsoever. As long as his foot heals properly and he’s got no issues with it, it shouldn’t delay anything.

“I’ll just tell you this, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jon fights two more times this year. That’s very aggressive and I know that’s crazy, but it’s something that he discussed with me and we talked about it. I told Superman to relax a little bit, you’re injured right now, but he’s got an aggressive timeline in his head. Certain goals and accomplishments that he wants and we’re looking to get that record.”
...
“The truth and the fact of the matter is before we can talk any superfight or any move in weight class or anything to that effect, Jon Jones wants to win his next fight at light heavyweight, he wants to break that record, he wants to own that record solely. He wants to be considered the greatest light heavyweight of all time at this point,” Kawa stated. “I already think he is the greatest light heavyweight of all time, record or no record.

Well, that pretty much puts him out of contention for that big November superfight Dana White was hoping for.

Bryan Caraway continues to take the brunt of the anger for the UFC's decision to strip Pat Healy of over a hundred grand in bonuses. First it was just for his poorly received 'Drugs are bad mmkay' response when given Pat's Submission of the Night money, and now I'm sure he's also getting blamed for Nate Diaz being suspended too. But just to give you a little insight into where Bryan was coming from when he said those mean things about pot:

In general, there's nothing wrong with saying you don't like weed. But maybe consider your timing a little, huh guy? Right after the UFC just took $135,000 away from a Strikeforce Rocky and gave half of it to you isn't the time to go "GOD BLESS THE BACKWARDS DRUG RULES IN THIS SPORT!" That's what people are mostly pissed off about. I'm sure there'll be a lot of responsible pot smokers who will now be offended that Bryan credits weed with sending his sister down the path to drug addiction too, but I'll take it as the clarifying explanation it is.

IT'S SO WRECKED, MAN. Sorry, I had to use that joke one more time now that Shane is retired. And since he is no longer putting himself into a position where other people are trying to maim him in a cage, we get to find out how rickety his body has really become:

Carwin's decision had been a few months in the making, precipitated by a knee injury that sidelined him from a headlining bout against fellow Ultimate Fighter 16 coach Roy Nelson last December. The final confirmation came in the form of a letter from Carwin's spine surgeon, who recommended he step down from combat sports' competition entirely.

"Once the knee got better, I tried to go back to training and had problems with my spine, my lower back.," said Carwin. "That [letter] obviously made the decision for me, for us."

With all said and done, Carwin walks away from professional sports with six bulging and an additional three ruptured discs. He's also developed foraminal stenosis and arthritis.

Foraminal stenosis, which narrows the passage that the spinal cord runs through and constricts on the nerve roots, carries symptoms like numbness, weakness, burning sensations, tingling and "pins and needles" in the arms and legs. This and Carwin's arthritis made for some uncomfortable-to-excruciating training sessions at Denver's Grudge Training Center over the last few years, as he prepared for bouts against Gabriel Gonzaga, Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar.

My God this Carwin. Let's hope he stopped soon enough, because that's a lot of spinal damage right there.

Looks like I wasn't the only one who irrationally channeled his rage over the Pat Healy situation onto Bryan Caraway. Nate Diaz also called out the guy who ended up pocketing $65,000 worth of Healy's UFC bonus money, and of course he did it in typical Diaz fashion:

Of course, that don't fly in today's mainstream UFC and the hammer was dropped pretty much immediately:

"We are very disappointed by Nate Diaz's comments, which are in no way reflective of our organization," the statement read. "Nate is currently suspended pending internal investigation and we will provide further comment once the matter has been decided."

And in what I assume is an attempt to show this may not be like the oh so brutal suspension Matt Mitrione suffered through for two whole weeks:

Meanwhile, Nate's manager Mike Kogan thinks people just misunderstood Diaz's exotic NoCal colloquialisms:

“Guess what? The word f—-t, at least in Northern California, and where Nate is from, means bitch. It means you’re a little punk. It has nothing to do with homosexuals at all. So when Nate made the comment that he made, he didn’t make it in reference to homosexuals or calling Caraway a homosexual. He just said it was a bitch move.”

This reminds me of that time King Mo tried to explain that calling a female NSAC commissioner a bitch was totally cool because we live in a more inclusive world now where anyone can be a bitch regardless of gender.
The post Nate Diaz drops the other F-bomb, gets insta-suspended appeared first on Fightlinker.com.

It's not even the French version. It's the Quebecois version of the movie. Yes, that's right. Quebeckers not only get their own version of Disney movies, they get celebrities in them too! I think I'll go check out what the Newfoundland version is all aboot, aye.
The post Georges St Pierre is in Monstres Académie appeared first on Fightlinker.com.

After spending the last few months watching the UFC sell wolf tickets, it seems like Nick might be looking to sell a few of his own. The latest word from the 209 is that Diaz is getting into the fight promoting game. The California State Athletic commission has confirmed that Nick is applying for a temporary license and if that is granted, you can look forward to WAR MMA on June 22nd in Stockton. As for who will fight ... hold onto your butts:

This is of course just a tweet from an account we're not even 100% sure is currently being driven by the Diaz brothers, and I've learned not to count my twitter chickens before they hatch out into the real world, but still. Wouldn't this be the freakshow to end all freakshows? And Nick Diaz is just crazy enough to try and pull it off. And when Shaq turns the fight down? No worries, homey. Nick can step right in and fight Canseco himself!
