Fight Alert: Sergei Kharitonov vs Jeff Monson
When: DREAM.8, April 5th
Where: Nippon Gaishi Hall, Nagoya, Japan
Source: Nightmare of Battle
Assessment: If Jeff Monson fights the way he fought against Roy Nelson, he’s going to end up with something a lot worse than a gift decision. The Snowman has looked generally disinterested in his past few fights. What ever happened to the submission expert Monson? I don’t remember him managing anything remotely resembling a dangerous submission against Nelson.
On Kharitonov’s side, he’s also slowed down but still hits harder than a baseball bat. He was the last guy to take out Alistair Overeem, and I guess that means something nowadays. Look for Kharitonov to knock Monson down with a solid right and finish him off with ground and pound.
Hype: 7/10 – This has a much better chance of ending with a first round knockout than a three round decision. Still, Jeff Monson is pretty irrelevant nowadays to anyone other than police scanner enthusiasts, and Kharitonov hasn’t had a meaningful fight in over a year and a half. I’d be more excited about this if I thought DREAM actually had a plan for the winner, but since that’s not how they roll … meh. Long story short, this will be a good fight but it won’t tell us anything we don’t already know and nothing interesting will change because of it.
Odds: Kharitonov (-250) vs Monson (+180)
