If heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury was hoping to raise his profile by calling out Cain Velasquez right after he won the UFC, he succeeded. For the cost of a few minutes just sayin’ stuff on twitter, he got the attention of everyone in MMA. People that didn’t know his name before certainly do now, and when you’ve got as cool of a name as ‘Tyson Fury’ that shit ain’t about to slide out of your brain any time soon.
It wasn’t just fans that reacted to his challenge. James ‘The Colossus’ Thompson threw together the above hilarious counter-callout and even Cain Velasquez himself responded with a pretty mild-mannered and reasonable counter:
“I’m not a boxer,” he said. “I’m a mixed martial artist, and if he wants to fight, he can go into the UFC and work his way up like everybody else does. Nothing is given to you in this world.
“To me, it’s like don’t talk about it, go ahead and do it. That’s all I have to say about that.”
Pft, typical talk from the son of a poor migrant Mexican field worker. But when you’re a privileged white person, lots of stuff is given to you! Maybe not a UFC heavyweight title shot, but Brock Lesnar proved even that can be offered up on a platter to the right person. For now though, maybe Tyson should stick with the more realistic option: fighting James Thompson in England for the glory and the lulz. At the very least, it should result in lots of entertaining tweets and video blogs.
