Fightlinker’s UFC84 i-pick-ac list

As you may or may not know, we’ve got a bet with CagePotato riding on the results of UFC 84 … whoever between us scores lower on our predictions has to drink ipecac. So rather than trust my own instincts (which act like retarded spidey senses on acid), I went to the forums to get some advice. While I still stuck with a few of my sure things (there’s no fucking way I’ll ever support Keith Jardine over my precious Wandy), the help was certainly appreciated and should help me sneak victory away from the Bens. Here we go!

B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk
I’m giving Sean Sherk some credit here: he’s not going to be as easy to finish as a lot of the other guys BJ Penn has fought. But when it comes down to it, Sherk has been sliced open by Kenny Florian and power-kneed to the face by Hermes Franca. By the end of the Franca fight, Hermes was standing back up after every takedown with ease. Add in the fact that Sherk is off the sauce and it’s a recipe for a Penn win. BJ Penn – R3 – Submission

Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida
I know most of you are going to wonder “What the fuck are you doing?” but back when Tito was big I was also a brainwashed teenager who loved watching him fight. While pre-back problem Tito was never as destructive as many people would have you believe, he was still excellent at smothering people and beating the shit out of them across three rounds. I also think he’s finally got the fire to fight and train like he needs to in order to win a bout. So for that reason I’m picking Tito Ortiz – Decision.

Wanderlei Silva vs. Keith Jardine
Keith Jardine’s pussy tactic he used on Chuck Liddell won’t work on a guy like Wanderlei Silva. Four out of Jardine’s five UFC wins have come via decision, so in my mind that gives Wanderlei Silva three rounds to be aggressive and knock this fucker out. Wanderlei Silva, R2, KO

Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendes
Who the fuck is Antonio Mendes anyways? Sure he’s got a good record … in Europe, where the idea of German superiority would have been squashed had MMA been around back in the 40’s. Besides, Thiago Silva is an absolute monster. There’s no way he’s losing to a UFC virgin. Thiago Silva, R1, TKO

Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic
I have a feeling that Reljic is going to be the guy to come in and surprise everyone. Sleeper win for Goran Reljic, R2, Submission

My prelim i-pick-acs after the jump

Preliminary Card

Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura
As this fight looks more PRIDE than UFC, I expect Sok to find his nuts and knock this fucker out in spectacular fashion. Sokoudjou, R1, KO

Jon Koppenhaver vs Yoshiyuki Yoshida
The Japanese are nothing if not tough, but I expect Koppenhaver to get the nod if not only for aggression. Jon Koppenhaver, Decision

Rich Clementi vs Terry Etim
As much as I hate Rich Clementi, he’s shown he’s got some skills. He can weather a storm as shown in his win over Anthony Johnson, and his striking looked decent in his fight against Sam Stout. I’ve never seen much in Etim that has ever really impressed me so I’m going to say Rich Clementi, R1, Submission

Rousimar Palhares vs Ivan Salaverry
Originally I was going to pick Salaverry since I knew more about him, but the Jackals informed me of the goodness that is Palhares. And truth be told, Salaverry hasn’t looked like he gave a shit in a long time so I don’t expect to much out of him other than toughness. Rousimar Palhares, Decision

Jason Tan vs Dong Hyun Kim
Thos in the know seem to like Dong Hyun Kim, and how can I pass up on the opportunity to bet on a dude named Dong? Plus Jason Tan sucks. Dong Hyun Kim, R1, KO

Christian Wellisch vs Shane Carwin
Carwin is a monster of a man and the UFC is banking on him to tear the HW division a new one. Just because we’re due for a new heavyweight superpower, I’m betting on Shane Carwin, R1, KO

  • #1 Jackal

i disagree with 7 of the fights. but for your sake, i hope i am wrong

  • Esther

As much as I’d like Tito to win for fun headlines the following day and to set the UFC world on its head — I pretty much think Lyoto is unstoppable. And yeah, Palhares is pretty awesome.

My stomach churns though, just thinking about this.

  • garth

is jake in on this too or is it all ryan hork on the line? both bens have to suffer if they lose, right?

  • godzillad

Holy Christ, did you actually just say that Hermes was standing up out of takedowns with ease? What fight were you watching? That’s ridiculous.

Seriously guys, I know you play up the gimmick of less than acceptable MMA knowledge, but you have to remember that there is a huge chunk of people that will just take your word for it.

This is how PRIDE got blown up to mythic proportions, with hearsay and mistruths.

  • Method

Outside of the Tito fight, We’ve got the same picks

  • Allah Ackbar

Nakamura can weather a storm. He’ll win the fight in the last two rounds.

  • Swedish guy

I’m sorry to say it seems you have picked the fights following your heart more than your brain.
I’d be surprised if that doesn’t come back to haunt you. And by haunt I mean make you vomit all over Montreal.

  • Esther

Jake’s gotta rub his back while he pukes. Also, someone has to record it.

  • fightlinker

Godzillad, I know it’s painful to do, but watch the 4th and 5th rounds of the Sherk/Franca fight again. Franca realized he had no problem getting back up … but then Sherk would just shoot and take him right back down again.

  • RL Dookiefuck

War machine is a total headcase with bad cardio, mediocre skills, an unimpressive record and questionable heart. Picking him over the Cage Force welterweight champion is a good way to spend your afternoon vomiting uncontrollably.

    Yoshida will be your undoing.

    Machida too.

  • Jemaleddin

After looking at some picks of Shane Carwin, I’ve got to say: you might want to wait on drinking the ipecac until the drug test results are released. The man looks like he’s not afraid of needles, if you get my drift.

  • zex

tito is a really bad pick imo

  • Zane

Fightlinker, I just watched the 4th and 5th rounds of Franca/Sherk and you were right, its like Sherk forgot how to control someone on the ground, and given BJ has better JJ than Franca, I don’t see how Sherk can win this fight. His only hope was to grind out a decision by laying on BJ, but after watching that I am convinced he is not that great of a wrestler as people claim. I am with you but BJ in the 2nd round.

  • CagePotato/Goldstein

For the record, it’s just me on the hook for this ipecac thing. I wouldn’t drag the new hire into this mess, and I assumed that it would just be Ryan on the puking block too. But whatever, the more the merrier.

That being said, these picks just made my day. LOFL at Tito by decision!

  • Popetastic

Wow, FL, I actually agree with all but one of your picks. I have Gouveia winning, but that’s kind of a wildcard anyway.

Nobody seems to be picking Ortiz, but I agree with you. I get the feeling that Tito is going to come out strong Saturday.

  • DannyP72

Reasonable picks but I still think Yoshida is a better pick than WARMACHINE

  • fightlinker

We’ll see you LOL through all that VOMIT Ben. It’ll be fucking shweet

  • Donk

  • I signed up for Fightliner!

Boo-urns, Yoshida is the man really think you should watch some of his fights and then look at koppenhavers great competition.

  • Bling Crosby

I have a system for picking fights in the UFC. Unless it’s Okami, never bet on the Asain guy. They’re cursed in America or some shit.

  • Hattori Hanzo Gracie

Look over Jordan Breen’s shoulder while he’s making his picks. Seems to know too much about mma

  • Johnny

Tito for the W by decision or 3rd round stoppage.

I’ve seen Lyoto get gassed when he’s in the clinch or on the ground a lot – the best areas of Tito’s game. Add to that Tito’s mad cardio, and you’ve got L #1 for future 205 lbs champ Lyoto Machida.

  • Jordan Breen

Well, at least you didn’t pick Tan or Mendes. Make sure none comes out your nose, cupcake.

  • Leland Roling

    Well said, Breen.
Koppenhaver over Yoshida is a stretch by far. If “War
Machine” somehow miraculously wins, I’ll be impressed, but Yoshida’s cage control is demoralizing to his opponents. He’s a god damn nightmare against the cage.

  • Ryan

Agreed, a lot of these picks aren’t very good Fightlinker… Reljik over Gouveia? Are you freaking kidding me? Some UFC virgin who is 7-0 against total scrubs training out of Gracie Barra UK… against Gouveia who’s now 4 in a row? Oh, I forgot about his Crocop pedigree (didn’t Werdum also train striking with Crocop…?)

Yoshida absolutely murdered Kikuchi, and you think WAR MACHINE is going to beat him? Hm…

And have you watched any tape on Carwin? The guy has awful, awful technique. Some sloppy doubles, messy passes to mount, and a surge of punches for the stoppage. Wellisch is 2 in a row, the best submission guy out of AKA, and can take helacious shots (watch the Junk fight, or ever Kongo til the knee). He’ll get the sub…

  • Asa

So Jacob, when you set up the lights, make sure you get a good fill (maybe just regular indoor lighting), and a strong spot (like attaching a 5-dollar clamp light to a nearby doorway.) and a rim (another clamp from behind) so we can really see the vomit. I personally think the rim light’ll really help the puke pop. And if possible line the walls and floors of the room with black trash bags. you can use plywood spray-painted black on the floor instead to avoid slipping, but still get a good visual of the chunder. All doable for about thirty bucks.

Sunlight is also an option, but winning this bet with those picks isn’t.

  • Asbel

I don’t think your picks are so bad but Ben’s picks are more solid imo. Either way, I salute your sacrifice for our entertainment.

  • esther

Yes, for sure backlight the vomit so there is separation. Though again, for your sake, I hope you just get to enjoy your fruity pebbles without finding out that all those colors will just make brown.

  • catch

You totally fucked up on Jon/Yoshida. I’ll laugh if you lose by one pick.
