Fights, fights, fights!

Today has been a busy day as far as bookings go … nothing earth-shattering but I figured half the people who come on MMA sites are only interested in knowing what new matchups are on their way so maybe I should start covering that shit. So without further ado, here’s what Joe Silva and Scott Coker have been up to:

Cris Cyborg vs Hitomi Akano @ Strikeforce: Shamrock vs Diaz
Finally Cyborg has an opponent! We’d been kinda worried that she’d been forced off the XMMA card in Montreal for nothing, but Strikeforce has come through with a decent opponent in Hitomi Akano. Not quite as good as the XMMA had booked with Marloes Coenen, but still not bad. Akano has been around the block before and scrapped with Tara LaRosa, Vanessa Porto, Amanda Buckner, and Debi Purcell. Sure, she lost all of these fights, making her the Thomas Denny of women’s MMA. Which is why I figure she’s been chosen for Cyborg. Tough, but not too tough. They don’t want to give her a total can, but they don’t wanna risk losing their epic Gina-Cyborg fight, right?

The great thing about this match is that both fighters are total mingers. Before I continue, I want to clarify that I mean this in a good way! I’ve been pretty concerned that Strikeforce was going to run their women’s division like a beauty pageant, so seeing a matchup like this makes me at least a bit more confident that talent will be the deciding factor over model looks.

Stefan Struve vs Denis Stojnic @ UFC 99
So Stefan Struve hasn’t been fired, which is surprising since I thought the Secret made all your thoughts come true and I thought really hard about him getting canned. He’ll be facing off against Denis Stojnic, making this fight a Holland vs Bosnia contest. But really, regardless of who wins the fight, Bosnians still live in Bosnia so they lose.

Alessio Sakara vs Alan Belcher @ UFC 99
I don’t know how Sakara has managed to keep his job, what with his worrisome habit of getting knocked out cold in the first round every other fight. A couple more hardcore knockouts like that and he’ll be the Eric Lindros of MMA, except sucky. Alan Belcher … I’m officially boycotting him until he stops listening to Rich Clementi’s cornering. “Don’t kick!” is not good advice when your fighter is a fucking KICKBOXER.

Yushin Okami vs Dan Miller @ UFC 98
Seeing Thales Leites fighting for the title at UFC 97 and Yushin Okami fighting Dan Miller at UFC 98 makes my head hurt. That is all.

Paul Taylor vs Peter Sobotta @ UFC 99
UK fighter Paul Taylor returns from a year off due to a fucked rib to take on German native Peter Sobotta. How will British mediocrity fare against German mediocrity? I’m on the edge of my seat here.
