In a perfect world, a mixed martial arts competitor’s health is safeguarded by the ever-watchful eye of the referee, whose experienced gaze is focused intently on the fighters in the cage, and whose quick reflexes are held at the ready. Are these men who so gallantly put themselves at risk of physical harm intelligently defending themselves? Is it time to separate the combatants and call a halt to the bout? Is that guy dead? These are the questions that often run through the heads of that trusted third man in the cage, and it’s hoped that his ability to perceive imminent danger and act without hesitation will keep the sport free of grave injury and even death.
Then there’s this dude, who needed about 200 people in the audience screaming “He’s out! He’s out!” to know what’s going on.
