GSP could move … to lightweight???

Georges St Pierre’s trainer Firas Zahabi threw a bit of a curveball yesterday regarding GSP changing weight classes. Instead of moving up to middleweight like everyone wants him to, Firas would actually have Georges drop down to lightweight:

“Well to be honest with you, I have recommended to Georges, you know…the only reason I don’t recommend it now is because Frankie Edgar is the champion, but I’d want him to move down to 155 if Frankie was not the champion. Obviously we’re part of the Renzo Gracie team and we’d never fight Frankie Edgar, because obviously we’re all Renzo Gracie fighters. But if it wasn’t the case, you know, I’d rather him go down to 155 because Georges is not a very big welterweight. People might think he is, he’s actually not very big. And him making 170 is extremely easy for him.

Honestly, it’s probably one of the easiest weight cuts from all that I coach, and I coach a lot of professional fighters. Georges making 170 is getting a little too easy for him, so I’d recommend to him in the future, who knows what the cards hold, but if we don’t have a team member that’s champion or anything like that, I would recommend him to go down first before going up.”

Pardon me if I’m not all that excited about this possibility. Yeah sure, GSP at 155 opens up some interesting possibilities. But considering the guy’s already dominating at 170, how much of a challenge is 155 supposed to offer? Excellent, Georges will have even more of an advantage in his fights! That’s what the fans wanna see!

Plus this news is just another nail in the GSP / Anderson Silva superfight coffin. I know, that sucker is already looking prety damn nailed shut. But call me an optomist – that’s just how I roll dontchaknow? – I like to hope the UFC can still make the big fights happen.

I hope this will shine a light on how guys like Penn and Cotoure are relics of a bygone era in mma.

Having to the skills to be a high level mixed martial artist is one part of a successful career, but actually having to fight up a weight class against bigger opponents requires something you have to be born with: balls.

The fear of defeat isn’t Georges biggest flaw its a huge part of it but not the be all end all. Its the percieved notion of his that he cannot win/should not fight someone if he doesn’t have more advantages than them.

    gsp is a scared coward

Remember a couple years ago when people would talk about how GSP was about 185-190lbs when he stepped in the cage, and was supposedly a rather large welterweight? Now folks talk like he’s a bit small for 170. WTF?

  • scissors61

What a load of garbage. That motherfucker would look like a goddamn skeleton if he tried to make 155. Zahabi is getting on my nerves lately.

  • frickshun

This is some yakkety sax level of comedic bullshit. I thought they had him ADD TEN POUNDS OF MUSCLE last year.

  • scissors61

Now folks talk like he’s a bit small for 170.

And it’s not like there’s been a sudden influx of gigantic 170lbers on par with what happened in the HW division a while back or anything. The only really massive 170lb weight-cutter I can think of (that’s even anywhere near possibly sniffing a title shot) is Anthony Johnson. Other than that most of the guys at the top of 170 now are the same top guys from when GSP was a “big” welterweight.

  • kvelertak

    GSP, ever shitting out.

  • Mixed Martial Adam

It’s just his trainer talking. Georges won’t move up or down as his marketing brand, belt and martial arts training are all more important to him than having a challenging main event fight.

  • Reverend Clint

    great another wrestler at 155

  • unclefesterdanawhite

Georges isn’t very confident about his chances against Anderson. So there really is no point for him to fight Anderson. He’s already defeated himself mentally. Georges is an athlete, not a fighter.

  • CAP

^I kinda agree with this. George tasted defeat and he didn’t like it at all. And he has so much more to lose now, thus his unimpressive style. But he wins.

  • iamphoenix

    ^unfortunately.

I feel like Georges is loosing more fans and coming off as a bigger pussy each coming day.

Word, imagine how bad it’d look if he had actually said or done anything!  I’m sure he’d loose lots more fans.

  • iamphoenix

gsp totally has loose big pussy fans.

  • kwagnuth

GSP is scared of AS. AS is calling out a smaller George but doesn’t want to fight Jones or Sonnen. These two are coming off like major pussies. I would rather see them both lose these fights than see the way they are acting these days. When it is all said and done they will be remembered as the guys sho had a shitload of talent but never stepped up and put it on the line.

  • Reverend Clint

anderson is a giant flappy vag and GSP is a smaller flappy vag

  • iamphoenix

hey, don’t throw anderson into this. He’s protected by the beliebers.

  • CAP

    P4P pussy ass pussies.

  • Reverend Clint

they should be at the pound with the other pussies

  • DJ ThunderElbows

He said he wouldn’t do it because of the cut.  He’d rather go up in weight when the time comes, which is why he’s trying all the different strength training methods.
