How is Ivan Salaverry still getting UFC fights?

It’s new hotness vs old and busted: the UFC is putting their new Brazilian acquisition Rousimar Palhares against Ivan Salaverry in May. You may remember Ivan Salaverry as the guy who doesn’t seem to give a shit about fighting in the UFC. You also may remember Ivan Salaverry as the guy who got trounced by Terry Martin in 2 minutes the last time he fought.

Honestly, I have no idea why this guy is even getting thrown a booking. There’s about several thousand more deserving guys out there who are young and hungry who would strangle their mothers to death with fishing wire for a chance to fight in the dark matches. But instead we’ve got cranky old Ivan stepping up once again. Blows my mind.

    Why Ivan?

Because a win over a name opponent might give the new guy more legitimacy than a win over… another new guy.

And he dances and acts gay when he wins. I like that in a cage fighter.

Oh, plus it sets up that rematch with Gono that EVERYONES been talking about.

Man I loved it when it Ivan tapped Fryklund with that body triangle. And the triangle on Riggs was sweet too. I don’t care about any bad attitude. I hope Ivan fucks this new fish up.

Since Ivan lives in Seattle, I think he’s cool as shit, and his wife is hot.

Terry Martin isn’t a slouch by any means, and Ivan had everything to lose by fighting him. Terry Martin is top notch in my opinion, and I don’t give a shit that fuckface Leben somehow got that last punch in.

I hope Ivan can put together a decent run, and maybe end up in a title shot position(seemingly unlikely.)

Fightlinker, I’ll tell you why Ivan doesn’t give a shit. Ivan has been very vocal in the past (2006) about hating the way the UFC treats the fighters and that’s why he was eager to leave the UFC and sign with the WFA at the time. Ivan Salaverry is stuck with the UFC because the UFC bought out the WFA and hence got a hold of his contract. So that’s why he is pissed off and is reluctantly fighting for the UFC. Unless he wants to pull a Randy, he has no freakin choice. He has to honor that contract he signed with the WFA and he has to honor it with the guys who bought the WFA (Zuffa). When Salaverry is kept under UFC contract and made to fight against his wishes, of course that’s going to hurt his motivation. If you work at McDonalds and make minimum wage, do you put enthusiasm in your work? Fuck no. That’s worker morale for you. Greedy capitalists who don’t pay their workers shit aren’t going to get enthousiastic and motivated workers. It’s the same with the UFC.

The UFC should have just released Ivan Salaverry from his contract after losing to Terry Martin. They would have been able to right? If Ivan doesn’t want to be in the UFC, why does the UFC keep him around? I’d rather see another young, hungry guy taking his place in the UFC and Ivan Salaverry in EliteXC or Strikeforce where he’d actually be motivated to put out 100%.

it’s def. strange that they keep him around under contract. Maybe Dana’s just doing it to show who’s boss?

    Ivan Salaverry is the man…
He is also a slick and technical fighter and he has a personality.

  • Geoff

I thought Ivan retired after Martin trounced him.

  • intenso

He has the best tattoo in MMA.

  • nick

I remember Ivan’s last UFC fight was supposed to be the last on his contract, so the UFC must have wanted him back.

  • Plague

Ivan’s cool. He seems to have a pretty complete game, which is more than I can say for a lot of UFC fighters. I like a guy who can throw a good headkick, or just as easily submit a guy. And his tattoo rocks.

You are probably right. It makes sense from the UFC perspective, to keep a star or relatively known fighter under contract against his will. Hence the whole Randy Couture deal. But Ivan Salaverry isn’t a star and there isn’t much demand for his services in the UFC. So if he REALLY doesn’t want to work for you after you bought out the company that wrote his contract, you might as well just let him go.

    Re: fightlinker, atom

You both (especially you f-linker) are slanderous, ignorant fools. How dare you twist Salaverry’s words of truth.
