In perhaps the wisest move of her career, Bellator’s female strawweight champ Zoila Gurgel has jumped ship to a promotion that actually stages women’s fights on the regular, namely all-girl league Invicta FC:
Flyweight (125 pounds) superstar Zoila Frausto Gurgel (12-2) of Cincinnati, Ohio has signed a multi-fight contract with Invicta Fighting Championships and will make her debut for the women’s world championship Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion at its next event on an April date to be announced soon.
Frausto Gurgel will square off with submission expert Jennifer Maia (6-2) of Curitiba, Parana Brazil.
That event is obviously Invicta 5 scheduled for April 6th, to be headlined by Jessica Penne (10-1, whose lone loss was to Gurgel) defending her atomweight belt against Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson (10-3, who is indeed a hottie), plus Barb Honchak (7-2) vs Venessa Porto (15-5) for the inaugural flyweight title. It also features the debut of former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman, which is bit odd since we recently heard that she had signed to the UFC. Anyway, while Zuffa is hedging their bets on WMMA until after the Rousey vs Carmouche
squash match title fight later this month, Invicta’s building like busy beavers (no pun intended).
Gurgel hasn’t fought at strawweight since she won the Bellator tournament in 2010, and plans to stay at flyweight for now, which isn’t surprising since she reportedly struggled to make 115 lbs. Her departure was apparently caused by Bellator choosing to not renew her contract, even though they’re coincidentally expected to stage a flyweight tourney sometime in the future. Perhaps Felice Herrig and her sexy outfits should also bail to Invicta rather than wait for that to happen, and take Jessica Eye along with her.
