“It really wasn’t even funny”

Dana White reviews last Sunday’s episode of the Simpsons and he wasn’t very impressed with what he saw:

“I was disappointed,” White says. “I think it was typical of people that don’t know anything about the sport. I know it’s for fun, but the second half of it really wasn’t even funny.”

It’s not that White thinks MMA should be immune from cartoon parody. He calls himself a Simpsons fan and says he found a few moments funny.

He liked the scalper who claimed he just had tickets because 200 of his friends didn’t show up, and the jiu-jitsu instructor doing a number of Homer’s spine amused him. He also laughed at the fight Marge shows other women in town — several minutes of ground-and-pound, then a reversal for the other guy to return the favor.

What he didn’t like:

• Children imitating MMA moves on the playground.

• The crowd dashing out after Marge’s fight to see two drunk guys fighting in the parking lot. “Which is the furthest thing from the truth at a mixed martial arts event,” White says. “That’s the Red Sox-Yankees game. That’s not a UFC event.”

• The promoter fighting and sucker-punching Marge. “He says you’re the first woman I’ve hit that I didn’t love — stuff like that really bothered me,” White says.

We reviewed the episode on the last Low Blow and it really was pretty damned unfunny and poorly put together … we had to keep asking “Wait, was that a joke?” But hey, surprise surprise: When you don’t really know all that much about a topic, good satire and parody is pretty hard to pull off. You end up with some lame nonsensical insider nods involving superman punches and Canadian flags and that’s about it.

As a fan of both MMA and the book Eat, Pray, Love (imagine Matt Polly with a vagina traveling around the world) let me assure you I would have been the first to love the joke they did involving both, but it was so contrived and flat that it failed hardcore. And that’s pretty much the story for most of the episode.

Anyways, you Americans can still watch the whole thing via Hulu. Anyone else that wants to watch it online is a dirty criminal and a fucking pirate and they can go fuck themselves sideways for wanting to see it online. Frick.
