It’s more about who DIDN’T win knockout of the night

Here’s the awards given out by the UFC post-UFC 104:

  • Fight of the Night: Pat Barry vs Antoni Hardonk
  • Knockout of the Night: Pat Barry
  • Submission of the Night: Stefan Struve

I can’t comment on those SpikeTV prelim fights since I was at a sportsbar watching overtime hockey on roughly 30 TV monitors – ‘Can one TV please show the fights?’ earned me looks as if I had said “Can one TV please show child porn?” Ah well. Dana White actually thought Anthony Johnson’s knockout was better than the Barry one, but he passed Rumble over because of that missing weight by 5 pounds thing:

So, then, Johnson would tell you he has no one to blame but himself but losing out on the event’s $60,000 Knockout of the Night bonus. UFC president Dana White said Johnson would have been the obvious winner of the award but couldn’t reward a fighter who missed weight.

“He should have … won it,” White said. “But since he didn’t make weight, he wasn’t eligible.”

Johnson was already giving up 20% of his purse – that’s $6000 of an estimated $26,000 paycheck – but most people don’t think 20% makes up for the weight advantage. I would be one of those people. Passing fighters over for post-event awards when they miss weight is just the extra punishment needed to give the situation some added claws.
