After his second fight against Urijah Faber didn’t even make it out of the first round, many thought Jens should retire. I didn’t think it was the right time, but after seeing Jens get caught in a textbook guillotine choke 33 seconds into his fight against Josh Grispi, I think it’s time. Jens wasn’t quite ready to admit it, but watching his reaction immediately after his loss (made slightly amusing by Grispi’s apologetic caresses), you get the feeling he thinks it might be time too. BUT he still didn’t say the magic words:
“It’s tough,” Pulver said afterward. “I started right here. I’m not going to be that guy who keeps saying I’m retiring, but I think I just ended in the same place I started. … I’m not saying I’m done yet, but it’s been incredible.”
I went into this fight figuring a loss to Grispi didn’t mean Jens would have to retire but when you get caught in such a basic trap and get tapped on your first offensive move of the fight … yeah. I know Pat Miletich said Jens was going to get back to basics but that’s probably not what he meant.
It’s a good thing Kenny Florian is currently sucking it up in the announcer’s booth. That meanS we might see Jens (and his sweater vest) make a return to WEC commenting. I’d be down with that … the guy is a pioneer of the lower weight classes and deserves a break after agreeing to get his ass kicked by Urijah Faber again in January for no other reason than Versus ratings.
