Cris Cyborg finally secured UFC gold, finishing Tonya Evinger in the third round for the vacant female featherweight belt. Cyborg, a former Invicta FC champion, and Evinger, who currently holds the Invicta FC bantamweight title, were fighting to replace Germaine de Randamie atop the division.
Early in the third round, it was Cyborg who caught Evinger, stopping her with a series of knees.
Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler returned, scoring a decision victory vs. Donald Cerrone in a much-talked-about fight. “Ruthless” had not fought since dropping the belt last year to Tyron Woodley, while the loss was the second straight for “Cowboy.”
Volkan Oezdemir served notice to the rest of the light heavyweight division, knocking out top contender Jimi Manuwa in just 42 seconds. The 27-year-old has now defeated Ovince Saint Preux, Misha Cirkunov and Manuwa since signing with the promotion earlier this year.
