Kim Winslow dances with the devil in the pale moonlight

If you happened to watch the Strikeforce event on Saturday night you got a pretty good look at many of the things that are wrong with athletic commissions nowadays. Sloppy reffing, questionable stoppages, and judging so bad it left you wondering if someone mixed up the fighters’ names. One ref singled out for screwing up particularly badly is Kim Winslow, who may or may not have allowed the King Mo / Lorenz Larkin fight go on a smidge past the point of sanity.

Kim already had a bit of a reputation after letting Cris Cyborg pulp Jan Finney back in 2010, and after this Larkin stoppage people are starting to wonder if she gets some sort of perverse pleasure staring an asswhupping right in the eye and letting it go on as long as possible.

Fortunately, she had one person on her side afterwards: King Mo himself. Here’s what he said immediately after the fight.

“She explained to me that she wants to give us a fair chance to keep on continuing, and I respect that,” Lawal said. “Cause if that was me, I’d rather be put to sleep than her jump in and me still be awake.”

But not everyone is gonna let that shit slide. Take King Mo for example. Here’s what he said at the post-fight press conference:

“I’m going to put it like this: The commission, they need to do something with [Winslow],” Lawal said. “Let her take a fight or something and give her a bad ref.”

“She said backstage, ‘If I hear ‘Ow’ or ‘Ouch’ or ‘Ooh,’ I’m going to stop the fight,'” Lawal went on to explain. “Man, this dude was cussing. I hit him, and he’s like, ‘Oh, [expletive].’ I was like, ‘Uh, ref?’ I looked at her, so I kept on hitting him. I was like, ‘Man, she needs to stop this thing.’ I heard people in the crowd yelling, ‘Stop it!’ Then she jumps in all late.”

“Let [Winslow] fight ‘Cyborg,’ and let’s do a late stoppage with her,” Lawal said. “I watched her almost get Jan Finney killed by ‘Cyborg.’ I think maybe the tables need to be turned. Put me in there as a ref, and I’ll just do a terrible job like her.”

King Mo makes some good points but I’m going to have to go ahead and agree with King Mo.

Yeah the “best ref in the biz” Herb Dean was a little late on the Jardine stoppage too. Funny Militich was yelling to stop the fight. Imma have to track down this fight and check it out.

  • DJ ThunderElbows

I finally got to watch it and it wasn’t that late.  He shifted his hips and changed the side he was flailing on just long enough to to confuse her.  Sometimes refs can’t tell what’s shifting hips to create space and escape the power angles for your opponent’s GnP versus what’s a guy trying to chase birdies back to the pillow fort in his hotel room.

And now that I’ve seen it, holy shit that T-wooden fight was a fucking turd.  He needs to take that shit to Bellator, where winning is everything.  Friday nights on MTV2 is right where he belongs.

  • DJ ThunderElbows

Additionally, I’ll take a wrestle-kicker like Rockhold over ten wrestle-punchers.  I would definitely like to see him in the UFC in 2013.  Right now his hand defense is a little sloppy though, so Andy would murder him before we get anything good outta it.

yup, yer right fer shure. Jacare was landing overhands all fight long and Jardine landed too many. Rockhold looks very good but he needs to tighten up his boxing defense or Andy (like you say) or Vitor will make him very unhappy. Shit even a guy as shit as Lawler might be able to land a shot on Luke and that one shot would likely then be a fight ender.

  • SkippyKid

She has no authority in there.

I’m not sexist but it’s natural for men not to listen to women when it comes to something is natural in men (fighting).

So she overcompensates – like a female cop.

I have nothing against her, but she does do a bad job. So does Mazza-mustache so I’m not just picking up her.

  • CAP

Checked out the King Mo stoppage and it seems fine to me. Larkin was defending the punches til a good few land that finish it. I have no problems with it. The stand up in round one on the other hand…

  • CAP

I’m looking for the Lawlor/Rockhold fight next I like that match up. No idea who else would be “in the mix”

  • fightlinker

    I’m not sexist but ****SEXISM****

Lot of that going around too. That whole ‘She never been punched in the face, how does she know about a fight’ thing … most MMA refs have martial arts backgrounds, wouldn’t surprise me if Kim does as well but because she’s a chick ‘she’s obv never been punched in the face and doesn’t know what she’s talking about’ and ‘can’t control men in the cage’  and oh yeah ‘women shouldn’t be fighting either because it’s bad’.

Oh, society. Sometimes you show how backwards you are

lols at Hyon being able to “beastfuck”.

I can’t help but see that going down like the Cote “beating” with him pimp-wangin’ her back and forth comically while she covers up and makes an O face.

  • Symbul

That stoppage was a couple of punches late but I think it was fine. Larkin wasn’t unconscious, he was just done. You and your BFF with the tiara are talking crazy, Ryan.

  • Letibleu

Look at it, it has eaten its fair share of punches in its life for sure.

I got no problem with woman refs but there is one thing she definately has not experienced before and that is being kicked in the balls. I seen a woman ref wave off a pretty obvious kick to the balls like it was nothing. The dude was clearly in pain and she was like what are you doing keep fighting. She just didn’t apprecieate what it is like to take a kick to the berries.

  • frickshun

    HAHA……Leti you funny bastard!!

  • Redping

I really didn’t think it was THAT bad. That guy is tough as shit and most fighters want to go limp before the ref stops it. I think refs are far more scared of making an early stoppage than a late one. A late stopid has a level of morbid fascination to it. Early stoppages you remember though, and will sometimes give a fighter reason to pretend they didn’t get their ass kicked (tito/shamrock 2).

The guy wasn’t fighting back but he wasn’t unconscious ’till the last couple of punches so I dunno, i bet if King Mo was there getting punched and then fight stopped and he could still sit up and go ‘hey i can still sit up!’ then he would be pissed at the stoppage in the other way. I thought he showed class by going ‘actually nah i guess she was right in that one’ but i see in the post fight he made it a full 360.

Larkin’s fine though, right? didn’t get stretchered off, no brain damage? if so, then wtf is king mo complaining about? shouldn’t lorenz complain if he thought it was a bad stoppage? i’m sick of these fighters who have a ‘I’M SO HARDCORE FIGHTS SHOULD BE STOPPED EARLIER’ stance. I think Kim was probably just as surprised as us that King Mo didn’t just re-create what T-Wo did to us the fight before

  • OlyReigns

Fairly sloppy fights all around. The Woodly fight was one of the most painful to watch in recent history. I wish the judges would give him the loss cause I didn’t see a guy in there trying to fight. His complaint was that he was too long to be able to hit? ummmmm problem with body shots?

I bet if Kim was as hot a Gina then most of you would be content to stroke your pud while she allows a murder to take place. That being said I didn’t think either fight was a late stoppage. They were both title fights and I think there is a greater worry for stopping a fight early when the belt is on the line. Better to let a guy take a few extra shots then ruin a guys shot at the title by not giving him every chance for a comeback. We have seen plenty of comebacks in the past.

The announcing team for strikeforce is really hard to take seriously. Mauro is a buffoon, and Miletich and Shamrock can’t agree on anything. Plus they all look ridiculous. Mauro should have hair, Shamrock should not still have braces at 40 and Miletich looks like he always has a mouth guard in.

  • Letibleu

Redthing, you always try too hard. If you cant make your point in 3 non run on sentences, you are posting at the wrong place. Love ya, why so serious?!

  • agentsmith

The thing with the Strikeforce on-air team is that I think they don’t like each other, and it shows.  Mauro and Pat would be better without Shammy though, he’s a retard who contributes nothing of value.
