I don’t know if it was his conscious or his legal advisors or some athletic commission who nixed the idea of Ken Shamrock dying in the ring against Kimbo Slice. Either way, it seems like Gary Shaw has decided to pass on that matchup in favor of an equally easy but ‘less likely to die’ opponent: James Thompson.
It doesn’t appear to be a rumor anymore. The May 31st KO victim for Kimbo Slice will be — God help us — James “The Colossus” Thompson and his glass jaw. The fight will be the main event for the first CBS/EliteXC Saturday Night Fights show, which is set to go down in Newark, NJ. All this comes from “Carson’s Corner”, an MMA radio show hosted by Bob Carson. The show’s team claims to have received confirmation from higher ups at ProElite, though their names were not given.
It’s not a bad pick … Thompson is a very likable guy and knows how to sell a fight. As we’ve said before, he wins or loses all of his fights in spectacular fashion, so who better to introduce Kimbo to the mainstream with? Of course, anyone who knows much about MMA also knows that James’ picture is in the dictionary next to ‘weak chin’. But hey … what were you guys thinking? That they’d throw Kimbo into the cage with some real competition? The novelty of Kimbo fighting MMA still hasn’t worn off, and quite frankly most people watching the CBS show aren’t going to know or care who he’s up against.
**CORRECTION** Yes, I called him Josh instead of James, I am ALWAYS getting his name mixed up with Josh Thomson, who’s a gay lightweight fighter for Strikeforce. Sorry guys, you’re likely to have to deal with this same mistake OVER AND OVER again in the coming months.
