It hasn’t been a great year for King Mo, and yesterday things got much worse for the Strikeforce fighter. Er, I mean FORMER Strikeforce fighter. UFC president Dana White put everyone on notice back in January that he was sick of fighters protesting their innocence at commission hearings:
“I don’t buy that s—. Own up to what you did. Everybody makes mistakes.”
White went on to say that Lawal or any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing drug and fails to admit the error of his ways risks never again fighting in a Zuffa-promoted event.
So what does the future hold for Lawal or former Strikeforce women’s featherweight titleholder Cristaine Santos, who also recently tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug earlier this month?
“I don’t know,” White said. “It depends on how they handle themselves. We will see.”
Yesterday was Mo’s hearing in front of the NSAC. So how did Lawal handle himself? Well, not so great. He stuck to his story that a supplement he was taking caused the positive test but still got hit with the full 9-month suspension and 39k fine. When asked what he thought of that, he said:
“I don’t think anybody gets a fair shake when it comes to anything in Vegas,”
“They come out hard on everybody,” Lawal told MMA Fighting moments after the hearing concluded. “Pretty much, when you come to [an NSAC hearing], you’re going to lose. That’s how I see it.”
“The whole cheating [accusation], their attitude about that, that’s what got me,” Lawal said. “I feel like I just wasted my time there, to be honest with you.”
Afterwards on twitter he took the criticism to another level:
I shoulda stayed home! Lol. NSAC had they mind made up b4 we got there! Lol. All the research we did and disclosed to em! They ignored! LOL. I honestly feel like Lundvall was a racist bitch asking me if I can read or speak english. Go on somewhere with that bullshit bitch!!! That one commissioner was bogus. The rest were coo and they were white and latino.
You can hear the ‘You understand English? Can you read English?’ exchange Mo is referring to at 6:45 in the above video. While Lundvall is certainly being a bitch right there, it sounds more like standard run of the mill bitchiness than the racism-induced variety. Even if it did wiggle the racist-o-meter, it still wasn’t wise of Mo to call a female commission member a bitch on twitter. Especially on the same day the NSAC showed up at a UFC press conference and randomly drug tested everyone there.
Soon afterwards Mo was fired. No specific word from the UFC as to why, but it probably has something to do with the bitch thing at the steroids hearing. That’s what the timing implies. Just my guess.
This sets up an interesting situation for next week where another Strikeforce fighter, Cris Cyborg, will be headed in front of a commission to try and explain away her positive drug test. After seeing how Mo’s situation turned out, she might want to consider just shutting up and taking the suspension on the chin.
