What’s the best way to establish a new star? Set him up against an aging legend of the sport, it seems. EliteXC knows this … while Tank Abbott didn’t exactly ‘pass the torch’ to Kimbo Slice (a more accurate description would be that Kimbo TOOK the torch and then sodomized Tank with it), the fight definitely established Kimbo as the new King of Brawlers in MMA.
And for all Dana White’s talk of Gary Shaw being a complete moron, it looks like the UFC liked that idea so much they’ve taken it for their own: they’re putting Brock Lesnar up against Mark Coleman in August. While the matchup certainly excites me more than the prospect of Brock Lesnar fighting Justin McCully, that doesn’t say much. I’d rather drink a cup of Tim Boetsch’s sweat than watch that particular matchup.
I recognize the fight is gonna be great for business. I also ‘get’ the whole wrestler vs wrestler angle and why it’s a smart setup. Coleman’s arsenal basically amounts to his takedowns, ground and pound, and some neck chokes. Since we’re still not sure Brock Lesnar’s neck is even susceptable to chokes, it’s a pretty safe bet this fight won’t end with another pesky submission.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I’m not really a fan of seeing a young guy beat the shit out of my yesteryear idols. Watching Mark Coleman get pounded to a pulp by Fedor was painful to say the least And while Brock Lesnar doesn’t have the technical acumen of Fedor, he’s got retard strength which will translate into a bad night for Mark Coleman. So while my business hat is off to the UFC for setting up a big fight, I’m still not down with them setting up what’s basically a circus match.
