Lesnar/Carwin at 106 scrapped

Shitty news from Kevin Iole:

UFC president Dana White confirmed the news to Yahoo! Sports. White said Lesnar has been ill for more than three-and-a-half weeks and unable to train. With the bout at UFC 106 less than a month away, Lesnar was forced to postpone the title defense.

“He said he’s never been this sick in his life,” White said. “He said it’s been going on for a long time and he just hasn’t been able to shake it.”…

Carwin (11-0), who made several appearances in Los Angeles on Saturday to promote the fight, was clearly disappointed at getting the news.

“My heart just sank, as you can imagine,” Carwin said. “Hopefully, we’ll get it rescheduled soon.”

Somewhere, Tito Ortiz is crying big, wet tears. This leaves UFC 106, for the moment, without a headliner, unless of course Ortiz/Griffin II now receives top billing (which would still sell, but not like a Lesnar-headlined card). I find it very, very hard to believe that this fight won’t simply be rescheduled, probably to the NYE card on January 2nd – you know, the one they’re having such trouble confirming Anderson Silva v Vitor Belfort… then again, last year they went all out for UFC 92, with two belts (including Nog’s interim belt) on the line, and the show set a new PPV record for the company. If Dana’s really trying to make the end of the year event into the must-see card for casuals and hardcore alike, having both Brock and Anderson defend on the same night would be absolute money. In the meantime, it looks like Cain is going to have to fight someone else in lieu of a rumored Mexico City title shot. I nominate Nog.

Update: From Carwin’s Twitter:

I just heard from Jason. Looks like it is posponed till Jan 2. I had h1ni myself and I understand how devastaing it can be.

Word. Nog, dos Santos and Cain are all currently unbooked. Leave your ideas for who gets the winner of this fight – and what fight should determine that – in the comments.

Also, Lesnar’s withdrawal has made The Lead on ESPN’s crawl. I’ve never seen an MMA fight either getting announced or shelved get that kind of coverage – it’s normally only after the card that MMA makes the crawl. Amirite?
