Matt Hughes’ wife says he’s done

Aside from a 10% possibility of redneck craftiness, no one is giving Matt Hughes much of a chance against Josh Koscheck. Matt’s old, he’s from another generation of UFC fighters, and he’s knocking on retirement’s door. This fight is the last on his current UFC contract, and he’s got pressure coming in from some interesting directions to hang ‘em up:

“The outcome of this fight won’t really matter, to be honest,” he said today. “After this fight, win or lose, doesn’t matter, I’ll talk to the UFC and we’ll figure out what we want to do.”

While co-headliner Hughes said he continues to get enjoyment out of his career as a fighter, there are some close to him that don’t feel the same way.

“My wife tells me I’m done fighting,” he admitted.

Ah, the ever-supportive spouse. Where would MMA fighters be without them? Probably in a hot tub with Chuck Liddell and several women of questionable virtue, much happier without all the crippling doubt that comes from a loved one emoting via 1001 passive aggressive actions and statements that they don’t believe in you.

Fortunately, Matt Hughes is a man of God and takes his instruction from The Bible. Win or lose, I think Matt should ponder retirement on his own terms, remembering First Corinthians, chapter 11:3…

Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Translation: STFU, ladies.

Matt Hughes signing Cindy Crawford’s boob. He’s got options. Just sayin’

I just lost respect for Cindy Crawford’s boobs.

    That’s some quote!!

His wife is right and though it’s a funny stance, I’d think you would feel the same way Hyan. Hughes is old and certainly never going to be in the mix again. He’s financially comfortable and getting KO’d lately. Of coarse he doesn’t really want to hang em up. That’s how fighters/pro-athletes are.

  • CAP

A win over Kos and he’s right back…”in the mix”. And the UFC will milk that country boy. One more loss and he’s done though.

  • frickshun

G–>serious question: How in the fuck do you know Hughes financial status?

  • CAP

^Zuffa golden boys usually do pretty well.

  • frickshun

Hughes hasn’t been a superstar in the UFC for over 3 years…..the years where Zuffa really started raking in dough. Do you think they paid him retroactively???

Two fights ago at UFC 117, Hughes was paid the same $100+100K that he was getting when he fought GSP the last time way back in 2007.  He fought 3 times last year and won twice, so that’s $500K plus his PPV cuts, so guaranteed he made 7-figures in 2010 alone… and that’s just from the UFC itself, not including sponsors.

So yeah, that buys a lot of country breakfasts.

^ I would’ve ended it with DoucheFuck!!! But that’s me. WTF happened to my post?

  • frickshun

Does he get PPV cuts? I haven’t heard his name associated w/it like Couture or Liddell. I don’t doubt he’s made good money but he also has to pay taxes, trainers, medical bills, etc. Not saying he doesn’t have some good money put away, but he’s not a “rich guy” that’s going to retire & never work again. I work w/guys that make $500k a year. There isn’t a single guy saying “I think I’ll retire @ 37.” When you have 50 more years to live (potentially), having a mil or 2 isn’t retirement money.

He’s not a flashy city boy douche like those guys you know. Him going to farm things.
