(our small contribution to the April Fools’ Day celebrations)
Goddamn, you know the MMA scene is completely devoid of humor when the most interesting April Fools’ Day joke is perpetrated by the right wing Christian fundamentalist. Matt Hughes got it right, making a claim that at face seemed somewhat credible but fell apart under closer scrutiny:
Well, for a long time I’ve talked about going up in weight class and I’ve decided to finally do it. Only I’m not going up to 185, I’m going up to 205 to fight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in June. I’m bulking up now and packing on muscle and I’m thinking that it will be nice to not have to cut weight for a change. I think it’s a great match-up for me and I’ve told Dana that if I win this, then I want a shot at the 205 title next.
Of course, anyone who knows anything about anyone knows that Shogun’s body keeps going snap, crackle, pop. Unless the UFC is gonna set up a wheelchair division, that wasn’t really very realistic. But that’s the whole point: a good April’s Fool prank like this shouldn’t trick anyone but the stupid. So props to Matt for doing it well.
Other pranks around the MMA world included:
Bloody Elbow – Nick Thomas gets Kimbo Slice tattoo : I liked it, but it was a bit half assed, and then they deleted the post later on in the day for some reason.
MMA Madness – UFC, EliteXC, IFL, Dream-1 agree to Super Bowl of MMA : A decent bit of satire here from the boys at MMA Madness.
MMA HQ – Fedor Agrees to Terms on Contract with UFC : MMA HQ put up a straight fake news article on the UFC signing Fedor which apparently suckered in half of Sherdog.net
MMA Ninja – Blog for sale : I love the ninja and all, but ya gotta be a bit bigger before pretending to sell or close your blog as an April Fool’s joke.
MMA Ring Report – Randy Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko in UFC! : Another straight fake story, this time with the UFC signing Fedor vs Randy. It’s a testament to how unlikely all that is for so many people to use it as their April Fool’s joke.
