Much ado about nothing

BJ Penn spent the last few months convincing us that Vaseline is the bane of jiu jitsu, a substance so slippery that even a bit of residue could render the best of guards completely impotent. So it’s not much of a surprise that when people saw Anderson Silva wipe the Vaseline from his face all over his body, they flipped out a bit. Sure, Thales Leites barely managed to touch Anderson Silva much less jiu jitsu him. But if he had and Anderson easily escaped, it could have been a bad situation.

Or not, since the commission-appointed referee actually understood that he was in charge of keeping the fighters from being slick and toweled Anderson down before shit got started:

However, Lavigne, who watched a replay of Saturday’s event, said the cameras did not reveal that both himself and Leites’ corner had noticed Silva repeatedly touch his face and body during his warm-up lap around the Octagon. Lavigne said Leites’ corner motioned for the referee to inspect Silva’s body, although Lavigne said he would have proceeded regardless.

“I saw he had a little Vaseline on his chest and I wiped it from his chest and arms, as I saw him touching them as well,” Lavigne told on Tuesday.

Lavigne said he then motioned to Leites’ corner and was given a “thumbs up” of approval.

Lavigne said both Silva and his corner were apologetic, and the fighter tried to assist the referee as he tended to him.

“While I wiped one glove, Silva took the end of the towel and wiped his other glove. He was helping me,” Lavigne said. “Both corners were aware of it and approved [of] it.”

This issue initially had me worried that there were still loopholes that opened the sport up to greasing incidents and allegations. Now that we saw how these issues are supposed to be dealt with, I don’t know if I should be more or less concerned. On one hand, it was nice to see this taken care of properly this time, but what are the chances that most other refs are going to check and catch this? A quick spot check from any of the commission reps between every round is all that needs to be done. So why am I so worried that this is going to get fucked up and missed down the road?
