Now that all that shitty Noons stuff is done, we can start to move on with our lives and EliteXC can roll along with their plan to try and stuff Nick Diaz into the role of Lightweight Champion. Remember all that talk about KJ Noons wanting Eddie Alvarez but Eddie being unavailable? Well, that apparently wasn’t very true at all because now Eddie and Nick will be tussling for the vacant belt on November 8th:
“I got back from my honeymoon about a week and a half ago and as soon as I got back I was on the horse that Monday,” Alvarez said in an exclusive interview with MMAWeekly.com. “I’ll be fighting Nick Diaz, we’re about 90-something percent positive I’ll be fighting Nick Diaz for the EliteXC title at 160 (pounds).”
While bout agreements have yet to be signed, and EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw would not commit to the bout during an appearance on MMAWeekly Radio Wednesday night, the fight has been verbally agreed to and seems all but a go between to the two lightweight contenders.
I know I should be getting excited for Diaz vs Alvarez – and I am, for reals! – but I just can’t get over how funny this lightweight title situation is. Perhaps it’s unfair to say EliteXC is trying to get Nick Diaz in as the lightweight champion … Eddie Alvarez is one bad dude, and I’m actually picking him to beat Diaz handily. Would it be more accurate to say EliteXC just wanted Noons out?
