So Scott Smith and Nick Diaz have just signed up to fight on the next big Strikeforce card, June 6th. Now the card looks something like this:
- Robbie Lawler vs Jake Shields
- Nick Diaz vs Scott Smith
- Alistair Overeem vs Brett Rogers (unconfirmed)
- Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante vs Jared Hamman
- Joe Riggs vs Phil Baroni
- Joey Villasenor vs TBA
- Jorge Gurgel vs TBA
- Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos vs. TBA
One thing you’ll notice is three fighters from the last Strikeforce event in April on the June card as well. While I’m actually a fan of quicker turnarounds, it does kinda make you realize how thin Strikeforce’s roster is that they’re already having to recycle fighters who just fought on their last card. While Nick Diaz managed to walk away from his fight generally unscathed, Scott Smith took quite a whuppin’ and I’m surprised he’s ready to go again.
Still, it’s an exciting enough fight. Putting Diaz’s pillow punches (as effective as they are across 200+ strikes) against Smith’s retarded KO power makes for an interesting dynamic. Smith was getting his ass kicked by a better fighter in Benji Radach but still managed to win that one too. But Nick Diaz beat Robbie Lawler, who beat Scott Smith handily enough. Will the MMA math compute? Will a win over Scott Smith earn Nick Diaz the respect he deserves? Probably not, but for a shotgun fight it’s gonna be a fun one to watch.
